As most of you know I am a BP shooter from the word go, and in this last load, I got 17 18# and 1 20# Dead soft containers. Also got 1800# of the other containers. [smilie=w:[smilie=w::castmine::bigsmyl2:

It was a good day.

You tryiin to start a "black hole" byyourselef down there in SC Sam???? lol Glad you making out realy good with your smelting business.

Tom who hasn't used up near all of his last shipment of WW "bullion" yet

Glad for ya!

I picked up from my local supply on Thursday. They had 64 of the 31.5# "cores" for me, plus another 400# of misc lead. That is 2400 lbs total. About 50# is pure.

Sounds like it was a good week on both sides of the country!

Have you had any of the 12" long x 1" diameter Blue pipe like containers? Seem to be real hard. This is the second batch in the past 2 months. I have about 40 of them so far.

I get those from time to time. mine seem to be made from the same stuff as the small blue vials that are listed on SQL's home page. They should be, since they are both xenon containers from the same company (at least the ones I get).

I have only gotten a few of the longer blue xenon vials. However, they always have about 100 lbs of the smaller ones.

Have never gotten a short one. Long ones started last month. Got a pink Radioactive Iodine Container this time also, 20# BHN under 8.

Thanks,

So, let me ask:

Where are you getting this sort of thing from???? Do I have local places for that sort of thing here???

I'm presuming that where ever you are getting these containers from, it makes sense that they are local, and that you pick up. So, we wouldn't be competing with you.

Can you share with me what kind of place you get these containers from?

Oh, and are you having to BUY these from the suppliers? Or, are they giving them away?

Local radiopharmacy. I have to pay to play. Previously they were selling to a scrapper, and I supplanted him by offering to pay the same rate per pound and pick up.

I started off keeping what I needed and selling the balance locally in the paper for $1.00/lb. I only need about 10-20 lbs a month for my habit, and pick about about 1000 lbs a month. My ad lead me to a couple of local guys who cast commercially, so now I generally pick-up, drop off, and have a little lead + cash to buy components.

It can be a challenge to get in the door at the radio pharmacy sometimes. There are two in my market. I have several friends who work at one, where I get the lead. Been working on the other, but can't get past reception yet.

They don't give it away do they.

Dialog?

"So, honestly, I don't want any radioactive materials. I am not a terrorist. I just want to melt the lead down so I can make..... um..... bullets......"

That about how the dialog goes with those people?

Just ask them who supplies the isotopes and tell them you want to see who handles their scrap lead. You are a recycler.

If they ask what I do with it, I tell them honestly that I clean it, refine it into ingots, classify it by hardness and sell it to various people who may use it for a variety of purposes.

I have sold to guys making bullets, fishing lures, duck decoys, anchors, pinewood derby cars and model boat ballast. I event sold some to a guy who wanted weight for his truck in the winter.

Dagnabbit! There goes my plan to offer you some pure lead ingots to swap even for some of your harder ones! Congrats on your score :Fire:!

You can always offer, you never know. I cast for BP, almost exclusively Pure or 30:1

Thanks for the reply, I'm looking for something with enough antimony to make about 14 air-cooled. I have a good lead on a bunch of Linotype alloy from the local college, seems they're getting rid of their printing equipment this summer and the alloy is mine for scrap prices. I'll just harden up some of what I have.

I get some real shiny small isotope containers that when melted have alot of slushy dross form on the top. This is unlike any of the others containers (I get about 7 different containers) and it really does not want to go back in the alloy. I have fluxed, increased temp, etc. So I scoop it off and sell it to the scrapper. The ingots are harder than the rest of the containers, about 12 to 14BHN.
So now I use these to harden up the other containers.

I have found with some bullet styles, like the SWCs some tin added to the pot really helps fill out. Boolits like the Lee RFN or TC don't really need tin added.

I saw a bunch of blue "pipes'' at the recycler the other day and didn't think much about em, they sell all lead @ .60lb should I run back down there for them? I uselly just pick up some of the round 30lb things and some of the smaller isitope "cans''.

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it.

Are the isotopes contaminated with anything when you get them? ie... radiation, etc ...

Muddy Creek Sam
07-07-2010, 03:14 PM
No, They have to keep them for 60 days past the half life.

Sam

Please help me understand this. In my understanding of radioactive nuclides .. a radioactive isotope decays perfectly, but there would still be some level of radioactive contamination even after 60 days past the half life. It may be in such minute forms that it would be the equivalent of an x-ray, but wouldn't melting the lead release it into the atmosphere?

Help me understand this.

Actually, they have to decay them for a minimum number of half lives (lifes?), and they have to be tested with a certain type of meter prior to release to scrappers. You will get more radiation from the rocks on pass on a hike in the park.

The most common isotope is Tech99-m, which has a 6 hour half-life as I recall. There are a variety of others used, with the iodine's having the longest half-life.

Got ya!

So ... 60 days past their half life would be more than sufficient to decontaminate them.
