View Full Version : Is there a cartridge you'd like to see offered in a different type of gun?

Examples might be, if Marlin or Winchester offered a lever gun in 454 Casull, instead of being stuck with Puma being the only one. Or maybe the 327 Fed Mag being offered in a rifle.

327Fed would be good. Would really like Marlin to neck down their 338ME to 7mm, but thats just wishful thinking.

Marlin had a .475 Linebaugh lever in the works at one time. It was on the website, and Jerry's Sports Center had it listed on their website (there were never any in stock). Then it just disappeared. I would have definitely bought one.

It would be nice if Marlin would at least make one in .454.

I didn't know we had so many lever action lovers here. I really cannot come up with anything that has not been covered but would like to see "real" rifling with some depth to it it most calibers mentioned. Marlin made a lot of noise about their "Ballard" rifling and then gave us something that looked shot out from the factory. Same with throats. It seems to me if you are already rifling and chambering a rifle, how much more work would it be to do it right?

I agree, especially for boolits. Much easier to shoot longer before cleaning when using deeper grooves. Give me a short bolt action using all the pistol calibers of choice. Would be nice have a switch barrel gun, with interchangable bolt apparatus to mate with the different cases. ... felix

One of my dreams is in-process right now. Ruger will soon be building their lightweight #1A single-shot in .303 British, and I have one on order.

S&W Scandium J-frame in .460 Weatherby. Hey, you'd only need one round.

How about bringing back the Remington 788 (I have a bunch, but I'm missing the 7mm-08 and .308) and adding the .221 and .17 Fireball? They could add the .35 Remington or .358 Winchester, with my preference going to the Remington as a cast boolit cartridge.

I'd love to see S&W adopt 5 inch barrels as standard production items for all L and N frames. I'd like to see the L frame chambered in .327 Federal in both 5 and 6 inch lengths, possibly with an 8-round cylinder.

I would like to see the Winchester M94AE in a M64 or Black Shadow version with 24" barrels in 307 and 356 Winchester. The 307 with a minimum 12" twist (I would prefer a 14" twist) with the 160 LeveRevolution bullets at 2700 -2800 fps would make it a dandy. It also would be very useable for cast bullets, especially for us old farts with aging eyes who appreciate the longer sight radius. The bonus of a low mounted scope on the AE makes it a very useable 300+ yard rifle. The 356 Winchester with a minimum of 14' twist (I would prefer the 16' twist) would be the cat's meow with 200 - 250 gr cast bullets. With jacketed bullets of 200+ gr, especially the LeveRevolution bullets, it also makes for a nice elk/bear lever action rifle.

Naw, man! 45 Winchester Magnum, gotta be rimless!

A-Z said basically the same thing, but I want a Smith Airweight in SIX shot, .327 Federal Magnum. Or maybe an L-frame 8-shot, that would be cool too. I think it's a freakin' crime that that wonderful little magnum is going to fade into obscurity because nobody ever bothered to produce THE GUN IT WAS DESIGNED FOR.

While I'm dreamin', give me a Ruger NM Vaquero, 7-1/2" bbl, blued, in .327 Federal to go with my 1866 Henry .327 Federal or a Marlin 336, what a combo!

I would love to have a 30-06 lever action. It would have to have a tubular magazine though, lever actions just look wrong with a box or rotary magazine. I think it would be great if someone started making lever actions with those twisted tube magazines like I have seen on old Remington pumps, that way you could load any bullet/boolit configuration. Anyone know why you don’t see those twisted tube magazines anymore? I think Hornady’s Flex-tip bullets are a good idea and all, but they are still limited to the “lever” calibers and whatever new ones Hornady/Marlin feels they need to design. It would seem like a much better idea to have a lever action that could handle spire point bullets, then you would be able to sell them in great American calibers like 30-06, 243, 22-250.

I wish Remington would offer their 700 short action or even the M7 in .30 Remington. They tooled up for the 6.8 so how hard could it be? They still make .30 Remington brass and perhaps they may find a few hunters that still believe you don't need an utra-mag to take deer at 200 yards. They might even be able to get one more round of .30R in the magazine vs. the .308W. Make it light and slick and I bet it'll sell. Heck one can sell anything with the right marketing campaign!

If a company can make a 44AMP why can't Glock or Ruger make one? I'd like to see a semi-auto pistol with a 6" barrel in 44 caliber. I'd also like to see the same cartridge in a semi-auto rifle configuration. Why can't Glock/Ruger make a semi-auto pistol in .357 Magnum? Why not a pocket sized semi-auto in .17HMR?

I'd like a carbine in 44AMP (44 AutoMag) with a box magazine. Bolt or semiauto. Actually, I'd like both.
It's as practical as a .44 Mag carbine and the rimless cartridges stack better in a magazine.
Jeff Cooper once described a "Thumper" concept that was a short handy semiauto in 44 AMP with a 20-rd magazine, and I've liked the idea ever since.

Might as well ask for an interchangeable 357 AMP barrel option with that one.

I'd like a short bolt action in something like 460 or 500 S&W, or 475/480. Or a lever.

A .41 Special L-frame S&W would be good.
OK, a .41 Spl in about anything would be good.

I'd like to see the S&W 696 come back (5 shot 44 Spl L frame) but with a four or five inch barrel option.

The .32-20 in a few different revolvers could be fun. Like a K or L frame S&W.

I've had an urge for a short, light, bolt action rifle in 35 Remington for a while. I always look at the short-chambered small ring Mauser barrels, and think of the basket case Spanish Mauser I got at a garage sale but never do anything about it.

An itty bitty bolt action in .221 Fireball. I have a rebarreled Rem 600 in 221, but a factory version would be nice. The little CZ or the .223-size Mini-Mauser would be good.
I wouldn't mind trying a .300 Whisper on the same size rifle.

M1A in .358 Winchester. They cataloged them for a while. I don't know if they actually made any.

I'd like a barrel in .338-06 or 35 Whelen for the Garand. Not sure why other than I like Garands and either caliber might be fun in one for awhile. I know about the .338 and 458 Win Mags from McCann, but I'm trying to be a little more reasonable.

Double rifle in .22 LR.
Don't know why, except for general cuteness.

Contender barrels in .32-20, 218 Bee, 221 Fireball, .41 Mag, 357 AMP, and 44 AMP. They've made a couple of those in the past, but not now, and I don't have them. Might as well ask for 10" and carbine lengths for all.

Here is one that I really want, but doubt there would be many takers.
I have an M1941 Johnson, and since the barrel removes and/or swaps easily, I've thought some more barrels might be nice. I'd first want a .308 barrel about 20" long. Other barrels in .30-06/.308-based cases would be OK too, but I'll start with the .308. There is a guy in TX who makes up new barrels for them, but he gets his blanks short-chambered in .30-06 so that's the choice.

BarryinIN mentioned a few other wish list items that are/were available. Remington's custom shop cataloged the Model 7 in .35 Remington not too long ago. The .221 Fireball is available in the CZ 527 American and the Cooper Model 38. Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing offers a double rifle in
.22 LR. They make a reproduction of the Winchester M21. They later scaled the M21 frame down for .28 ga. and down some more for the .410 bore. They then scaled down the M21 .410 frame and made a .22 LR double rifle. I handled one at the SCI convention a couple of years ago. It goes beyond cute all the way to drop dead gorgeous. As best I recall, with full coverage engraving, the best wood and all the bells and whistles one could want the price was $32 to $35K!!!!!
Remember the old saying..."Be careful what you wish for."
