HI,
I know the Savage 99, Sako finwolf, & the Winchester 88 were chambered in 308 win.
Were any other lever actions chambered for the 308?

If you consider the .307 Win as a .308 with a rim, then add the Marlin 336ER(?) and 1894 Winchester. Likewise, the .356 Win is a .358 Win with a rim. Both of the rimmed cases are reputedly of thicker, heavier brass, and loaded to a little lower pressure.

There is an article in one of the Handloader's Cast Bullet Special Editions (1992) where Ron Carmicheal takes a 336 35 Rem and has it rechambered to 358 Win, and calls it a .356 Rimless. Its been a while since I read it, but I seem to recall him loading to lower than .358 Win velocities.

HI,
THANKS FOR THE INFO.
As all the ones I knew of are not made any more. DRAT!
Finding one is hard, and they are not cheap.
But the BLR is not cheap ether.:Fire::Fire:

HI,
FINDING A SAVAGE 99,FINWOLF, OR A WIN 88 IN 308 IS A BIT LIKE FINDING THE NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK.
BUT I AGREE I DO BELIEVE I WOULD LOVE THE SAV. 99 IN 308.:Fire::Fire:

I would stay away from the 88 nice guns but the triggers are not all that great plus since they say WINCHESTER ON THEM you will pay a premium price.

See 99's in 308 for sale on gun broker all the time some are not priced to badly.

As for myself I got lucky in my 308 hunt and found a local fire captain that got the hurts to bow hunt and needed to get cash for a couple new bows.

Sold me a like new 99F made in 1957 for $425 Williams foolproof sight on it to boot!

It's not for sale! Heck I have enough trouble prying it out of the hands of family when we get togther for Thanksgiving.

It ain't a lever gun, but the big R made a nice pump gum in 308. I have a Police model in 308, 16 1/2" Bbl, parkerised finished, seriously good rifle, packs plenty whoompum in a small package. A tad fatter than a levergun, may be a bother on a hoss, but perfect walking about or in a jeep/truck. Got a 1.5-4 Leupold VariX111 on mine, loverlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

HI,
OUCH, I DID NOT KNOW THE SAV. 99, USED WAS GOING THAT MUCH!!!!:groner:
Did not even really consider the BLR as I figured I could not even afford a used one.
But they are very sweet, just like the Sav., which I also like.

It's all in the hunt! I stole that 99 for the price I payed for it! If you need a pic to see why send me a e mail addy by PM. I still can't figure out how to post here.

I would never pay some of the prices I see listed for 99's. Most that are so high are collector grade guns from the pre war era but a lot of 99's from the 50's seem over priced as well.

I looked 15 years before I found this 99 and am still looking for a 250 Savage.

They changed the 99 about 1964 and moved the safety from the lever up to the top of the tang. Not as nice as the earlier guns they made a real nice straight stocked 250 Savage that I really want.

I am not in search and destroy mode to get one! That just leads to spending more than you should for a poorer example than you really want because you fear you won't ever find another example!

Savage sold ton of 99's after the 1964 change over, some in really strong calibers!

I'd start my search there as the "collectrs" have been turning there nose's up at those guns so far.

I will tell you to avoid the Clip model 99 it simply is not the same gun as the other 99's.

My favorite deer rifle is my Savage 99A. I bought it used at a gunstore, there was a small piece of the stock broke at the rear of the receiver. It had a $100.00 price tag on it. I epoxied the piece back in and have been shooting it for 15 years w/o a problrm. The first group I shot w/ it measured about 3/4" using factory ammo.
I was in Cabela's in Fort Worth (I think) a little over a year ago and they had many used Savage 99's. And If I remember correctly, most of them had $350.00-400.00 price tags on them. That's not the takedown models or more rare calibers.
Check out Gunbroker.com, they may have what your looking for. Good luck, jmsj

hi,
Thanks for the tip on the clip fed 99's.
Also what would be the average price range on a shooter in 308.
I figure some calibers may be more expensive than others, so I am hoping the 308 is a cheaper one.

BOOM BOOM,

Not likely. Model 99s prior to coming out in calibers like 243, 308, 358, 284 win. had a cartridge overall length limit of 2.600". In the previously mentioned calibers the COAL was increased to 2.800". These are harder to find and most often just a little more expensive than a standard 300 Savage. Don't mean you won't find one. Keep looking and don't give up. It took me over 15 years to find one in 284 win but find one I did, at Cabelas of all places and for $399.99. The buttstock was loose and probably why it was so cheap, but I glass bedded it and it can shoot sub moa if I do my part.

RATS,
I had considered the 284 for a long time, ( it is really the prime cal.) & as I had not seen one in over 15yrs. I figured they would be more expensive & an unlikely find, so switched to looking for one in 308, which I consider the next best cal.

4 Fingers of Australia brought up the Remington pump gun and I think he's right on target. My uncle had one of these back in the '60s. He harvested a lot of game with it and never had a problem. I think it was called a 760 or a 7600 or some such foolishness. Great firearm and a great suggestion from 4 Fingers of Death.
I managed to find a 99 Savage in 308 a while back (read quite a while back). It's a great rifle but they are demanding a premium price today and they are sort of hard to find. Save up your sheckels and keep your ear to the ground. If you want one you'll find one. Helice

Have you hunted w/ Pb boolits, & what was your success?

I got mine! Have a .358 BLR too. Both are fine rifles but you can get the BLR today. It is superbly accurate and no step down from the 99, except in nostalgia.

I haven't done a lot of loading with cast in the 99 in 284. I have a rcbs sillywet mould at 168 gr that shows signs of wanting to group. But because of the design they have to be loaded single shot and then shot when chambered. They have to be seated way too long and the bullet won't clear when extracted. If you go slow you can get them out without firing.
