Here's a clip I made today trying out my digital cameras video capabilities.
I'm shooting a 13" car rim at 75 yards.
The gun is my Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC
I got 4 hits out of six. I attribute my two misses to the fly that was trying to nest in my ear while I was shooting.

You have to be careful when shooting at steel when it has curved shapes because it could send a bullet back from where it came from.

+1 on the car rim sending the boolits back, it happened to me when I was a kid shooting a 22LR. The boolit barely missed me as it wizzed by my head.

GOOD point! I have a scar on my right bicep where I got hit by a bounceback from my buds 300 win mag. Luckily I was wearing several layers of clothes and only got hit by the bullet jacket. I'd have been in a world of hurt if the entire bullet had hit me. As it was, it felt like it broke my arm. I was numb for a few hours afterwards, and sore for days.

Many years ago I was attempting to demonstrate to two buddies the awesome power of the .41 magnum. I had a 4" M28 converted and was using the Lee 195 gr SWC at 1200 fps. We were cruising around on an elk scout in Chesnimous Unit in NE Oregon. I spotted a likely target, an old Dodge Power Wagon rim and hollered to "stop". I got out of the Blazer and told them to observe the death and destruction of said power rim. The shot was good, too good in fact. The bullet flattened out to the size of a silver dollar, came straight back and hit me in the belly sliding inside the shirt and onto my belly button (I wasn't wearing an undershirt). Let me tell you lead gets hot, very hot when expanded that fast:-( I hopped around yelling and screaming as my belly button was burned (that really does hurt!!!) and got no help from my "buddies". They had rolled out of the blazer laughing their asses off.

You look back on it and it was kind of funny but I was really lucky as all I got was a burned belly button. If that bullet hadn't expended most of it's energy expanding on the rim I could have really gut shot myself. Lesson learned; I don't shoot old Dodge Power rims anymore;-)

I don't think you missed...bullets probably just went through one of the holes.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I'll be building another swinging steel target to practice on when I get back from this next well. My bud's got me talked into trying to put a keith SWC through some elk ribs this fall, so I gotta get busy practicing. I'll post updates, provided they don't get to be too boring.

Took the guns and camcorder out again today for some fun. Had to fight a nasty 35mph wind that came up just as we got there, but we tried not to let that spoil our fun. Hope you enjoy these clips!

Folks,

Shooting at steel is dangerous, in the extreme, if not done properly.

The steel target should not fall from the top, it should swing from the bottom, toward the berm....that means all of the bullet fragments will wall fall to the ground in front of, or below the target, perhaps a few feet in front of the target.

If mild steel targets are used, they become partially penetrated by bullets...as in concave bullet strikes......a new shot can hit the top of the bullet strike, turn it around, and it will come back at you with real velocity.

Aim small. hit small.

Shooting in that wind will teach you control.

I jsust have to swat mosquitos here at the house, hard for wind to get to the range, of course we don't have winds like that here in TN.

Made me think of March in NM.

Yeah. there was a bit of a breeze. Depending on the gusts, I was holding 4 to 6 FEET into the wind.
It was just for fun anyhow. I'll definately stiffen up my alloy and probably go to a non HP SWC for elk. The expansion is just too explosive with the HP's

Yesterday my wife was shooting light 38 specials out of her Marlin 1894C at 27 yards at steel chickens . . . a small portion came back and stung my friend in the cheek! I was surprised it would splatter back that far . . . he was about 8'-10' off to her side . . .

I salute you Dan. You have finally found a use for golf balls that makes sense. What was the range when you taught those little suckers some manners? Really enjoyed the videos and I think that the campera person deserves a tip of the hat as well.

Golf balls were about 20 yards away. I have a trash bag half full of them. A friend gives them to me by the dozens. GREAT reactive targets that can be shot over and over again.
