Opinions on this one, from both rifle and ability to cast in the caliber?

I'm sure this has been covered before. However I'd like to know recent experiences with what guys are getting when they order the service grade.

I've owned 8 M1s in the past and will order a Service Grade in a month or two but I've never casted for them. I'd just sent off a order for a Rack Grade M1 Carbine yesterday. You could check out the CMP forum at http://www.thecmp.org/forums

I have two service grades, and two Rack Grade M1s and they all work well with cast. I shoot mostly a Lyman 311291 with 36 gr of IMR 4064 works well and shoots about as good as Jacketed FMJ do in the rifles.

I got a CMP service grade Garand about 18 months ago. What I got was essentially a new rifle. New stock with no dings, no visable metal on metal wear. It may have been rebuilt/re-parkerized at some point, but it looks brand new. I couldn't believe it and am VERY happy with my purchase. Haven't shot cast out of it yet.

A service grade will be a great gun for you. I have two field grades, which both run fine as well, but have more 'character'.

I shoot BobS load (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showpost.php?p=312730&postcount=15) from them. I chose a lee 200 gr bullet as I am too cheap to pay for Lyman molds. I have used both TP and Dacron as a fill.

I used to cast for my CMP service grade. Given that my loads never got up to par in accuracy with the M2 Ball, I stopped shortly after starting. It works for some guys, but for me, I stick to J-word loads for semi-autos. If you do cast, I would suggest getting an adjustable plug to fine tune the cycling.

The 2 service grades I recieved from CMP 619.00 ea. delivered to my door CAN NOT BE BEAT by anything in my local gun shops. anything less than 1000.00 gets you a boat oar with a pipe wire tied to it SERIOUSLY. my 1st SA service grade has all SA parts that I can identify and all serial #s are SA only thing stopping this from correct grade is the stock. 2nd SA service grade 1942 has a better wood but a mix of manufacture parts. BOTH will shoot better than I can. both have great bores and mint muzzles and crowns. Barrels look almost unfired, well looked unfired. I had my first malfunction monday july 5th. front sight came loose and drifted off to the side.

I took one of my M1s out to the range yeaterday and blew off six clips of ammo at 200 yards from a bench rest. The results were 45 of the 48 rounds in the 10 and X ring two 9s just outside the 10 ring and one flyer in the 8 ring (must have been me). The load was a lyman 311041 sized 312" over 37 gr of 4064. Lots of fun and my rifle fuctioned fine.
