I have had what I thought was .22 .But now I think it might be 17 bullets in the mix that wont melt . The base just floats to the top Looks like lead no jacket . Any one know what they are .Marvin

Might be from "lead-free" frangible rounds. Tin/copper grains sintered together. See if one will snap in two using a pair of wire cutters.

Pure lead requries a bit more heat than alloyed lead. I see this when I get a few lead round balls in the range scrap. They are the last thing to melt @ 700deg.

Lead free or pure lead?

Probably some type of steel core ammo.

I do know FN makes aluminum core bullets for their 5.7X28 ammo.. maybe some other manufacturer has figured a way to coat the aluminum.
Otherwise, it just may be pure lead, which melts at 620. So, I would run the temp up to about 700... if they don't melt, pull them out..

It is not pure lead by any means . They are some form of fragmental bullet with a hard base that will not melt at 800 plus degrees . .Marvin

Maybe they've found a way to make 22lr bullets out of zinc?

The next time some float to the top I will set them to the side and inspect them better . I just looked through my stash and what looks like them cuts fairly easy with side cutters and appear to be soft . Looks like lead but wound melt so may be they are a zinc base 17 or 22 high velocity based bullet . Marvin
