Have used WC 820 in 30-30 and 308 cast boolit loads. Now would like to start loading the same WC 820 ( AA#9 burn speed) into .223 cases. In the 30-30 and 308 started with 15 grains and worked great in both cases. However would like to know a good start load in .223 size case. Just want to push tiny cast boolits at a modest speed with this powder. thanks
Heavy,
I used 9.0 grains of WC-820 (Lot#47320) and a Lyman 225646 (61 grains). The velocity was 1646 fps from a Super 14" Contender...
I tried many different boolits and powders and NEVER got any accuracy that was near acceptable at 100 yards--barely at 50 yards!...
That 9.0 grain charge was safe, or seemed so, in my Contender. I have no idea if it is an acceptable charge or not. I don't even know where I got the data...
SO, I DON'T RECOMMEND IT!!!! It might just give you some idea...
I am sure others on this site will "chirp" in as WC-820 was/is a pretty popular surplus powder, at least when it was available...
I will be curious as to the results you get with any cast boolit and the 223 Remington cartridge...
Good-luck...BCB

Never even heard or thought of trying it in a rifle cartridge. I have been using it for years in many different pistol cartriges. It was fantastic powder for the price back when I got mine, but the sweet deals on it seem to be gone.
WC 844 & WC 846 are great smaller case capacity surplus rifle powders.

My old batch of slow WC 820 is great stuff in pistol cartridges, but the new AA# 9 speed sucks in pistol cartridges.
So far it has worked very well in every rifle loading (well 7mm TCU I guess is pistol also) I have tried it in.
I have never tried it in 223, but it should work, just not sure of how well!

Thanks guys, 8 or 9 grains was my guess. Just casting a net to gather in some more knowledge before taking on a new adventure. Maybe Felix or Mavin will pipe in on the subject. From there posts over the years they seem to be knowledgable about such things. thanks again

I avoid low-density loads with any ball/spherical powder other than WW-231. Many have reported excellent results with WC-820 in rifle apps, but I won't try it. It does good work in higher-end Magnum revolvers, with both jacketed and cast boolits. My lot is the "AA-9 speed" variety, and it is about gone.
