I'm not out of WW's yet, and have a pretty good supply of lead and linotype. I would like to know at what ratio should I blend the two, making an alloy close to WW?

I cast for 44mag, 38/357, and 45 acp. Using Lee TL molds for all. Lube with LLA. Don't push any thing over 1100fps.

I main concern and or question is not making boolits unnecessarily "too hard".

I cast up a bunch of 45's last week out of 50/50 lead, lino mixture. Turned out sharp, good looking boolits. Can I go lower on linotype ????????????

Thanks,
Rusty

I think you could go 3 parts pure lead and 1 part lino and come close to WW alloy. You could probably go 4 to 1 for the .45 and .38 loads and with a good fitting boolit you should not get leading.

45 and 38 special can be made with almost pure lead. Neither are High Vel. rounds. A little tin to aid fillout, but hard alloy isn't needed.
Fit is way more important than hardness to avoid leading.
As hard as Lino is to come by, these days, I'd save it for a more worthy use.

I would suggest that you either find the "Alloy Calculator" on the site or go to to: http://www.lasc.us/CastBulletAlloy.htm and become real independent. You will have a thousand questions answered and answered pretty durn accurately by doing so.

Down load the Alloy Calculator from Cast Bullet Assoc .... http://www.castbulletassoc.org/downloads.shtml

I used 50# of magnum shot/40# of pure lead and a #of tin to get close. With the magnum shot you get the arsenic that helps if you want to heat treat.

3-1 ratio is pretty darn close.

3-1 ratio is pretty darn close.

That's the conclusion I had come to, Thanks fred.

Here is an Excel spreadsheet for calculating lead alloys.
