My girlfriends uncle brought his 7mm Mag Remington 700 over tonight because it wasnt going bang every time, he asked if I would look at it. The problem was obvious the bolt isnt locking into place. He said it would fire ever other round or so, my thinkin is because the bolt wont close all the way the firing pin isnt going far enough to sent a bullet down the barrel. When you do get the bolt down to where it is suppose to be its a bear to get back open.
I had this problem with my 25-06 Remington 700 before I had it rebarreled. The problem there was the action screws. They were to tight causing to much pressure making it almost impossible to open. The solution was to not tighten the screw as much.
I tried that with Bills rifle, no dice. Aparently he never cleaned the factory greasy oil junk off it, so I did that for him cleaned up the action. Tried the bolt again no dice.
I gave him the number for my Smith, he is going to take it to him tomorrow to see what he can do.
My only thoughts were the lugs need to be lapped to get that sucker to close all the way.
Any thoughts?
