I just started to reload and cast for a my Marlin 45/70. How many times on average can you reload brass. I am using a moderate load and new Starline brass. I annealed the brass before I seated any bullets. Thanks in advance.

I asked over at the Marlin site because I have quite a bit of brass and I have only reloaded some of them a few times. This is what the guy said so far only one reply. Starline Brass over 20 times so far. Winchester over 17 loadings and Remington only three times so far but he only has 20 Remington Cases I suspect he just got them and have not reloaded them that many times. I would suspect the Remington should last as long as the Winchester cases. Hopefully some others here can shed more light on the subject. Most of my cases I bought once fired from the local range and those I have loaded a couple of times so I myself have not loaded them a lot. I suspect that straight wall cases last longer then the bottle neck cases.

I have a couple hundred Remington and Winchester cases that I have been loading for over 20 years and probably have 40 or 60 reloads in each. I shoot mostly black powder and anneal the cases every 4 reload. Every now and then I get a case that fails and I replace it with a new case. I would guess that I have replaced about 1/4 of the original 200 but I am not sure. One thing I am sure of is that nickel plated cases do not last as long as plain brass ones. I got a hundred nickel plated RP cases about 10 years ago and used them mostly for TD rated smokeless loads and I only have about 30 of them left and I tossed six more at the last reloading.

About like loading a straight wall hand gun case .

Most of my case failures have been at the case mouth . Your annealing should help that .

1 or 2 longitudinal splits in the case body .

Most of my brass is RP or WW

God bless

P. S. Starline seems to be pretty goof brass , also .

I have been reloading the same batch of 100 Winchester cases for ten years. They still hold primers solidly and look like new when taken out of the ceramic tumbler.

I do anneal them every once in a while.

If you manage to wear any out, report back.

I am probably approaching 10 reloads on various manufacturer's brass. That is at Marlin 1895 power too. Like 300gr bullets going 2100fps. I have yet to chuck a piece of brass. I have settled down though and am loading 405gr hardcast now with Re7 powder. I have a .50Beowulf AR15 if I want to reaf on my shoulder. Hahaha! I HAVE noticed that Hornady brass is significantly shorter than the others! So much so that I would have to readjust my die set to make it crimp. Think I will save that brass for emergencies...

I have used mainly Rem 45-70 Brass and they will load many times so not to worry. But like everything else keep an eye out for splits as you never know. If I had to guess I have over 20 loads on my brass with smokeless powder.

One thing that wrecks brass for me is setting the case bell tool too aggressively. Otherwise mine have lasted with annealing for several loads. I mostly load moterate loads and a lot of BP.

As long as you shoot BP and load normal loads you will have long life out of most cases. The top target shooters prefer Winchester but I think Starline is making a lot of new friends.

I use starline and remington brass with mild to wild loads using rcbs 300GC,405GC,330GC BRP hammers,465GC BRP's,350GC saeco's and 400PB Mtn Molds boollits and the brass still works well. The 465 BRP's seemed to stretch the brass a little using 50 grains H-4895,might need to try another powder with that one.Accuracy was good but a compressed load that squished the top of the boolit since I don't have a flat seater. It didn't seem to like 3031.It kicked pretty good but not that bad.Not much different than the rcbs 405GC that actually weighs 420.The saeco 350 and BRP hammers love 3031.I like the rem brass a little better myself. The starline is good but seems a little hard.

I have mostly WInchester brass , although I have maybe 30-40 Remington cases I was given .

They all seem to do well for me so far . I don't really keep a count on how many loadings , but I've yet to have a case failure with either brand .

I have that BRP 465 mold coming !

And the Ballisti Cast 550 as well .

I just might order 100 pieces of Starline just for these two bullets .

Then I can use the WIN brass for the RD 350 and the REM brass for the RD 425 ;-)

I was using starline with the 465.They had a slight ring at the bottom using 50 grains 4895.I think I'll try RE-7 next to avoid a compressed load next time.It was accurate at 50 grains H-4895 going a inch at 60 yards.I have no doubt that the 465 boolits will shoot very well with the right powder. You'll like his molds.I watched him pour perfect boolits out of a 3 hole 465 mold time after time when I picked up my 30-30 mold.My 4 hole 311041 imp mold does the same ,very few rejects.HT'ed 173 boolits shoot half inch at 60 yards sometimes out of my 18 inch MG Texan with 25 grains RE-7 and 29 grains IMR3031.I'd buy another mold from him, quality is very good.

BRP sent me some of these bullets before I ordered his mold !

Shot them in WIN brass pushed with H322 and lit with a Federal 215 primer they shot very well !

He's also cutting me a couple 433-375GC and 433-400GC molds !

I've been reloading the same Starline Nichel Brass for about 3 years and I shoot preatty good loads they are starting to get to the point where I need to replace some.
