I recently posted this in the general 'Cast Boolits' section
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=86687
but I thought I might get a better response here....

I have recently acquired an IDEAL 358 439 HP mold.
I have read that the nose can be too long for some of the older S&W m28 cylinders unless crimped on the forward edge of the front driving band, but Im wondering if anyone has had issues using them in a Rossi levergun when using the original crimp groove?

The reason I ask is I loaded some (unknown make) 'Cowboy Style' RNFP's and when using 357 magnum brass, crimped in the groove they are too long for the Marlin & Rossi leverguns. They are slightly too long & hang up in the mag, unable to 'lift' into the feed position. I had to disassemble the mag to get them out.

I'm suspecting the same problem might arise with the 358-439 and was hoping to hear from others who use them to see what their experience is.

I use the 358429 (I no longer have a 439 but mine were the same length nose) in the Rossi and if it's crimped in the crimp groove it is too long in my gun. I seat the bullet in the case about half way up the front shoulder with a light taper crimp and it feeds fine. You could also use .38 cases and then crimp in the crimp groove.

Load it into .38 Special cases using .38 +P loads.

Thanks fecmech,
I'm just mucking around with some 38's at the moment, in a 6" S&W 586
Just loaded 6.6g of Win 540 and crimped in the groove. penetration was about 10" in a drum of dry beach sand, and 14" of water filled freezer bags. Expansion is quite violent in the water. The velocity should be much higher from the Rossi so this load may be just fine.
If not I'll try 357 cases & taper crimp on the front shoulder like you mentioned
