I`ve had a Lyman for a yr. now , I don`t leave it in the melt when done !

Don`t know if it will cause problems or not but so far so good !!!

Amazin no 1 has ever said a word about the little alloy scale on the Lyman ?????

Tom,

I like mine, it gives a good reference. They can't be readily adjusted and calibrated, but we don't need that capability, or necessarily want to pay for it anyway.

Lyman casting thermometer
Save your money and buy directly from Tel-Tru. That's where Lyman and the other vendors buy theirs!

I use mine jsut to keep the temp. the same when casting. The scale at the top may be correct melting temps. but my WW's melt at about a 100 deg. less than the scale shows so i am not real sure what temp. i am working at but i am able to keep it regulated using the gauge.

Wow! I wish I'd known about that. I recently bought the casting thermometer Brownells sells (haven't used it yet; I don't cast till the fall.)

I'm sure the Brownells unit will be top quality, and they'll back it if it isn't, but it cost a lot more than $19!!

Gents, I learned a long time ago, resellers don't make everything they sell ... some at a reasonable markup and others that put a steep profit on their catalog products that have their name on it. Caveat emptor!

Tom, nice to hear that with a thermometer as a casting tool, bullets are much better

John Boy,

I didn't imply that Brownells made the thermometer. I know they are just a reseller.

Point is, after 25+ years of doing business with them, I know if I'm not satisfied with the unit, they'll make me happy. They have done this countless times for me over the years, and in each instance it was because a product someone else manufactured was not up to par. And, instead of telling me to deal with the manufacturer, they always just said "Send it back, no questions asked."

I've had one for years. It has worked well and is accurate. But note that there will be some variance with bimetal thermometers. I was lucky, I was able to check it with a digital thermometer of known accuracy. I'm happy. As a commercial caster for many years I strongly recommend thermometers. In fact I consider them essential.
