Ok here is a poll.

I'm gonna ask how fast do you shoot air cooled wheel weights with no gas check?

Meaning what velocity do you comfortably shoot your AC WW alloy with no leading.

Not really interested in caliber for the poll, but feel free to comment on that in your post.

dang i was gonna be the first vote but as i was voting u did too lolz

edit for add...

it's that word "comfortable" that got me lolz i tend to get a lil nervous about future labor prospects when i push them above 13-1400 fps ( at least straight ww's add a wee bit of tin and a oz of #8 shot i'll "comfortably" go to 1600)

I can achieve comfortably 1700fps and less in several calibers just shooting AC WW's. Not many towards the high end of 1700fps, but several 44's around the 1400fps mark.

yea the poll has a bit of a stretch from 1300 to 1700fps but I didn't want to string it out to to many choices.

Top end is about 1100fps to 1200fps. Not as a goal or limit but that's just when accuracy is best.

1700 fps tested over oehler chronograph in 45-70 with Gould bullet. No lead and good accuracy, could even go some higher, but it gets painful.

Well I shoot a majority of the PB bullets in the handguns so I chose 1000 to 1300 fps. However the same 454 Casull PB load intended for the revolver can easily be pushed past 1300 fps in the lever action.

So "comfortable" depends on what we are talking about..................it's all subjective to pressures generated by each caliber, alloy hardness and the barrel length of such firearm etc.

Comfortable could mean, no muss, no fuss, no real, "tweaking" to make it work every time.

Darn, you said air cooled. I only water drop mine and get 1700fps all day long

I use the same loads in my .357 rifles as I do in my pistol. In the pistol they run in the neighborhood of 1250-1300 fps and in the rifle 1600-1650. Pistol 50 yd accuracy is in the 2-2.5" range and the rifles run a little better at 50 yds and at a 100 yds about 80% stay inside 3" with zingers out to 5 and 6". Wc 820 seems to be the leading free champ along with 296 and AA9. I think these ball powders actually scour the throats in my rifles. I will get some minor throat leading from 38 spl loads out of the rifles and 1 or 2 shots with a ball powder loaded magnum cleans the throats and first 1/2" of rifling of any lead streaks.
In the .357 or .44 Mag I have no problem running max mag loads with plain base bullets out of handguns.

I cannot legally vote in the poll because i cut my ww with pure lead to reduce the antimony wash that pure ww can give ya when you push on them. I comfortably shoot plain based wd 50/50 at 1400+ in quite a few toys though.

I keep most of the handgun loads down under 1100fps.
I have a couple of rifle loads in the 1300-1600fps range.

This is pretty much where I am at, but it is caliber/cartridge specific. It seems the larger caliber bullets are a bit more forgiving as to leading vs accuracy. Then again, it's kind of bbl specific as well. Most ahndguns will run to a bit over 1200fps & do fine, the 44mag & 45colt will go a bit more & the 45-70 a bit more still.

I mainly wanted a reference for all those who ask "how fast can I shoot WW's....." :D

thanks for the contributions!

Keep them coming!

Would been better to break at about 1500 which is about max for .357 Mag, altho I get
about 1700 or so in .44 mag carbines with my 1350 loads for pistols, so not too bad.

I find no need whatsoever for GCs in pistols or even in pistol carbines. AC WWts do fine,
given a good boolit design, proper diameter and good lube.

You might have even said "AC WWTs or softer"

You might want to refine the question a bit further.

I have a 38-55 load that shoots a gas check design without a gas check, but with a paper patch, at 1850 fps.

Cream of Wheat as a filler is another technique which can be used to successfully push ACWW well beyond the norm without using a gas check.

guess I could have stated no GC and no Paper patch either.

I was pushing 1200 in 44 mag and 1300 in 357 mag but I was getting some leading- not a lot, but some- and decided to scale back a bit. Now I run about 1000 in 44 mag and 1100 in 357 mag. Can shoot all day and no problems with lead- BUT- I no longer AC my WW boolits for high velocity loads, I started WD all of the Magnums, 9mm and 40 S&W with WW alloy. I switched to range scrap (usually WD for quicker cooling) for the lower velocity 38 spl and 45 acp.

However, I still wouldn't be afraid of pushing ACWW to 1200 fps.

Short version of my experience: Generally 1450 is the practical limit of PBACWW at 12-14 bhn in the Magnum handguns, many can't quite get that fast before having leading and accuracy issues. I can get 15-1600 fps in rifles pretty easily with ACWW and Dacron filler, but they have to have checks above that.

I shoot GC boolits without the gas check out of my 45-70 for a chronoed 1758 fps without a GC.

Could I go higher? I don't know, I GC em after that particular load.

All under 1000 fps in 44 Spcl and 38 Spcl.
