I used the search but didn't come up with much information regarding using this bullet for sabot usage.

I have a Hawken .50 muzzleloader i'm consider trying this combo in but wanted to touch base with anyone here that has tried this.

Combo considered here is

Lee TL452-230-TC http://www.fmreloading.com/Merchant2/tl452-230-tc.jpg
Harvester Crush Rib Sabot

I have a good friend who shoots factory Hornady .44 jacketed 240gr pistol rounds using the Harvester Crush Rib sabots with 1" results at 75 yards out of a Hawken so I figured maybe these 230gr Lee's would be worth a shot.

This would be nice since I already have this mold but if it's not a good combo then I don't have a problem with purchasing a different mold. I know I could just take the time to field test but it doesn't hurt to ask some fellow experts.

My ol man shoots that very same boolit and a mmp HP sabot over seven seven seven in his 15inch encore 50 and it works well for him. I make them out of softish range scrap and they get the job done nicely on whitetails. Your plan has merit if the twist is right. His twist is 1/28 but the 1/48 may do just fine also. Dads encore did not like the crush fit sabot one iota though.

My 1 in 48 underhammer prefers the BRP50MHunter, but the sabot may work just fine for you.

I'm not sure it will fit in the sabot. The .452 diameter seems a little large for most of the sabots that I have used. I used the Lyman 215 gr, .430 diameter slug. It is a gas check mold but I loaded it with out the GC. If the 452 will fit in the sabot with out bulging it, it should be ok. I would chedk the rate of twist though as a saboted bullet needs a fast twist of at least 1 in 48". Good luck.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I should have mentioned that my hawken is a 1:48 twist. I figured part of this puzzle is going to be finding the spot on sabot for proper fit of this particular bullet and my bore. The good news is this bullet has a tapered base which should aid in proper fit to the sabot.

You could get a cheap Lee sizer if the bullet is a little big.

I have a Lee .451 sizer and a Lyman Lubersizer with a sizer die at .452 so I should be good to go in that aspect depending what the sabot wants. Thanks

I got to thinking about it. Several Co. were making sabots for the 50 cal. I know they used to make sabots for the 44 bullets and the 45 bullets. You might check that out. It has been quite a few years since I used sabots. The best I could do with the 44 215gr cast bullet was about 4" groups at a 100 yards.. I am a round ball shooter when it comes to muzzle loading. I get the best results with them.

I use T/C's black sabots with Lee TL 452-230-2R boolits for just over MOA in my Traditions Pursuit LT with two of Hodgdon's 50/50 pellets. T/C's black sabots are for .45's, and the green ones are for .44's. FWIW.

i shoot this bullet in a Nosler sabot over 80 gr.of 2f KIK black powder. My cva in-line puts them in a 1 1/2 inch group at 75 yds. Would not be reluctant to take it for my deer hunting bullet. I do resize all of my cast bullets in a.452 sizer die. I like this bullet.

I was about to reassure the OP that it works very well out to 100 yards in my CVA Optima Pro, but this question was asked 4 years ago and he hasn't posted since June of 2010!
