The reason I asked is that we are about ready to weld my bowling ball mortar together, The powder chamber is 6in.by 6 in. round 1018 steel, 2 in.by 2 in. powder chamber, The barrel is a 3AA2400 argon tank, chrome moly steel. 20 in. long, the valve end is cut off with a 4 in. flat on the end. This will be welded to the base, the 6 in. powder chamber end has a 30 deg. by 1/2 in. chamfer to weld to the flat end of the tube. The 2 mated together will be flat to flat at 4 in. each, with one that has the 30 deg. chamfer, Welded with new wire welder using .035 wire and gas, Any ideas on welding, Thanks- Joe

Joe your "Welding Help" post was a bit abbreviated and cryptic. It sounds like you're trying to weld with a 110 volt machine and .035 wire. If the material you are trying to weld is thicker than about 3/16, 110 volts doesn't have the output needed. I would check with a welding supplier to see if the wire you have is appropriate for welding chrome-moly...Ray

I made a 2 3/4 inch Cohorn out of one piece, if you are welding over weld by a strenth of 3 and then once done, double and halve the powder charge, dig a hole , put it in, light it and see if your welds hold. I love the building and shooting of mortar and cannons
