I bought one of these last summer and it crapped out on first exposure to a melt. It is now stuck on about 500° and won't budge. Got lazy/busy and didn't save receipt so I couldn't return it.

Time goes by and I buy another just the other day. It goes to 600° and stops. It returns to norm after sitting a while, but 600 is all it gets.

Has anybody used one of these successfully? I'm 0 for 2.

I bought one maybe 4-5 years ago. Works fine.

Take them both, receipt not required and contact Lyman direct. Explane the problem and ask for direct replacements. It's gonna take weeks but you will get two new thermometers

Been using the same one for about 15 years, no problems at all.

Been using mine for about 8 years now - no problems - almost sounds like the needle is bent in side and catching on eother the glass front or the back of it.

I had one that read temp + 300F all the time. Lyman replaced it no problem. :-D

hpdrifter:

...then, when you get the new ones from Lyman, sell both of them QUICK to someone else and get a GOOD one from Bill Ferguson "the alloy metalsmith".

I second floodgate's suggestion. My Ferguson thermometer is more accurate and reliable than my Lyman.

why would I want to do someone that way?:)

What does his thermos run?

I dunno, don't you have ANY enemies?

"What does his thermos run?"

His price is $37.00, 50 cents LESS than Lyman's; and I - and others here - are completely satisfied with the quality. You can order it via:

<http://www.theantimonyman.com/thermometry.htm>

Lots of other goodies on his website, and he is very helpful in answering questions about lead alloys and their properties.

Hmm, will have to check his site out, thanks.

Have been casting off n on since the mid 50's, good long time ago.

Never used one til about 4 yrs ago when I finally coughed up $38 and got one from Midway. Since then I've had a lot less problems and a whole lot better bullets and sinkers because I don't cast until the melt is at last 750. I've seen this one read about 950 when I was pulled away from it awhile and left it cooking. So I know the Lee pot and the Lyman thermometer both will heat up that much.

Having it in my pot has sure made my casting life easier, I highly recommend everyone use one.

Price of thermometers from Midsouth Shooters Supply: Lyman-$27.92
RCBS-$38.49 w/handle
I am leaning to the RCBS because of the way RCBS stands behind their products.
