Good morning
Anyone have one? Are they any good with cast Boolits ?
I am thinking about a NEW for me ground hog gun to use next time up in the state of ILL. 50-100 yard shots or so as I tend to crawl about the ditches and wood lines.
If you have one you want to sell let me know....

Outstanding rifles for small game. Look for them as the Savage model 23 or Sporter. They went under both names. The 23A was 22 LR, 23 B was 25-20, 23C was 32-20, 23 D was 22 Hornet. I have all but the Hornet and no I'm not selling.

They are all accurate, light and very satisfying. Whatever you get be sure the barrel is good as they aren't replaceable, it's a one piece action/barrel. And make sure it comes with the clip as they are rarer than the rifles.

Well I have the .25-20 version of the same rifle, the Savage 23C being .32-20 and 23B in .25-20.

Its a rear locking action with a substantial locking lug on the left rear bolt body and bolt handle root as the lug on the right. The forward bolt body acts as a non rotating bolt head, the layout is similar to the savage and Stevens .22 rifles with barrel and receiver integral milled from a single piece of steel.

The magazines could be hard to find, but I think theres an aftermarket replacement mag, though haven't had to look for one.
The originals are marked for use with either .32-20 or .25-20 interchangably.

Workmanship is superb, and the rifle is much stronger than it needs to be for these cartridges.
Accuracy is great with my .25-20 and should be very good with the .32-20.
Both cartridges were available in standard velocity lead bullet loads and higher velocity jacketed bullet loads.
Too light for White tail perhaps, though a well placed shot would do the job, but plenty powerful enough for game not much lighter than the average Deer.

PS
I would not part with mine, just bragging about how good these rifles are.
I can't think of any rifle in this value range I'd trade it for either.
Mine is in near pristine condition.

Good morning
Thanks again everyone... Gonna have to see what i can arrange and have one ready to use on my next trip up. My old 1873 is just near a smoothbore and I missed several easy shots last time crawling about the bushes.. And I sure like to head shoot them bean eaters.

You get one, you're gonna want 2-3 more. The 22 is a blast!

Mine would cut one ragged hole at 50 yards with cast bullets and with the 2.5 Weaver scope was still under 1 1/2" at 100 yards. An excellent choice for small game up to coyote and wolf.

Again Thanks everyone.. DK17HMR that was some good reading... Groundhogs will be my intended victim but that heavy boolit load looks intreaging for a couple of areas I crawl about.

I suppose since it is a 73 you do not want to reline it?

Well relining may be the best economic option. I can see the Savage Rifles are in demand.

A great thing about the .25 and .32 Savage rifles is that ammunition prices prevented most original owners from firing these rifles more than necessary, and when gran pa's old savage got passed down it most likely ended up in the closet because the new owner either couldn't find shells or didn't want to invest in more than one box to keep with the ol girl encase it was needed.

My 23B had the remnants of a black laquer coating on the metal parts, probably to weather proof it. On removing the scraps of paint I found the bluing of barrel/receiver was 100% pristine with no visible wear. Only wear to the bluing is at the trigger guard.
The bore is perfect, probably no more than a couple of hundreds rounds ever put through it if that.
I got the rifle dirt cheap because the seller could not find .25-20 ammo in the gunshops here.

The rifles in more common calibers ended up being used a lot more when new, and when passed on weren't considered to be any thing special by the new owners, so they were more vunerable to abuse.

Magazine available;

A freind mistakenly bought an extra magazine for my 25-20 Savage a few years back at a gun show. It is for the later versions of the M23C and will not work in my M23 25-20.

I will sell it for what I paid for it plus shipping; how about an even $35

It's not any good to me so it should go to someone who can use it.

Good morning Larry..
Thank you for the offer.. Have to get a rifle first. My limited budget (plus my inability to stop buying molds) keeps me out of the running so far. I think the collectors are 32-20 nuts..
But I have long ago learned the best things come to those who wait on Godīs perfect timing..

I understand the poverty from buying moulds!!! I'm in no hurry to sell the magazine, just thought of it when I read this thread and thought you or someone might be interested.
