Can anyone tell me if standerd 458 Lott reamers cut the same type of long throat as a standerd 458 Win mag reamer?

Well, I just checked Clymer's website - the info they have listed for .458 Winchester is that it has a .469 freebore, and the .458 Lott has .460, not quite the same, but still alot.

Thanks for the reply on that. So if I am reading right (just got back from two days of near sleepless dip netting and my eyes feel rusty) thats only .006" shorter for the Lott. Not much. Same as what I was told buy Shaw.
So the idea I am getting is if I want a 458 win or lott with a 45/70 throat I will have to spring for a custom reamer. If so would anyone else be interested in using said reamer?

Bullshop,

Take a look at this article on converting the .458 WM to .458 Lott...

http://www.cybertorpedo.com/africanhunter/classcart/458_watts_lott_01.htm

Maybe throat dimensions could be shorter by doing the conversion??

Thanks, good article!
One little tidbit from it kind of pointed at the Watts having a shorter throat, yes? I met Mr Watts a couple times at the Ank. gun show. Since he passed his widdow gave all his stuff to a friend Cal Pappas for dispersal. OH MY!!! there were some nice rifles. Cal spent many evenings for the last couple years of Mr Watts life with him recording his story. I have a signed coppy from Cal and I will check to see if it gives chamber dimentions. I remember Mr Watts also claiming to have designed the 450/348 long before anyone else also.

several companies can supply "throatless" 458 win and 458 lott IIRC- Pac_Nor comes to mind, that combined with 1;18 twist should send Pb down range as fast and accurate as any- worjked fine for me in 458 Win, comes fully chambered about .020 deep, face off breech end and set shoulder back- price isn't out of line with other "prefit" barrels.

I checked my book and there is no drawing for the Watts.
I am having a thought, be carfull! If I have the mag lengthend for the full length Lott and it has the long throat I may not have enough room in the mag to seat bullets out far enough to touch the lands. On the other hand if I have the long mag and chamber for the 458 Win that would not be a problem seating boolits out.
I once used the 525 RCBS seated way out to touch in a 45/120 Sharps and it was extreamly accurate.
That long parallel sided boolit filled that long throat nicely. Should work bout the same for the standerd 458 Win chamber.

BS,if your interested I have a reamer here for the .458 Express. Basically it's the 3" version and will certainly supply all of the "oommph" you are looking for. I have a 458x2 built on a P-14 and a 458Lott that still is in the 75% finished range and would very much like to get finished but the other 225,552 projects I have going have circumvented the process. I had plans on converting the 458x2 to the Express but the this Lott project came along and the reamer has become surplus tooling.

This is the 450 Watts(center), but Ackley Improved version, I assume the throat is the same? maybe not, but anyway the throat is .210" long, with the 450 gr Lee seated to touch rifling with front drive band loaded OAL is 3.597", plenty of room in Rem 700 mag box(3.700")

That sounds good to me! You have a nead for a 257 Roberts reamer? I just finished one up so guess I am done with it.

No need here for reamers, this one was sitting in a gunshop and when I saw the cartridge it was for I just bought it. 45nut syndrome, any 45 cal just beckons me to get involved. A couple years have pseed now and my regular gunsmith has moved and I haven't found a replacement willing to work on the big enfield's. 4 spare actions and no gunsmith ,,,jeesh. I will send this up and then we can talk compensation.

Gents: Off topic a tad,but how many of you have seen M.L.Mcpherson's article:"What is possible with a Marlin".and specifically therein the 458 KE( Kodiak Express),said to duplicate 458 WinMag.ballistics AND from Marlin1895 action. I'm not thinking about doing that personally, but maybeso on a Mirobrownchester 1885.. (with extra stockweighting).Interesting article for the "farout fringe" of leveraction fans.....[smilie=1: Onceabull
