Since we get so many questions about what a zinc weight looks like, I thought I would make a pictorial for people to view. I have saved every Zn WW I have found in over 2000lbs of WW. So I dug out every unique peace and organized them by type. This is not exhaustive, there may well be other types out there. If you have some pictures of others feel free to add them. I am ordering the pictures from most common type to least common. You may notice that the two most common types I have found have no marking that would indicate Zinc. I tried to show the back profile when possible.

When I get a chance to go through them, I'll add all the stick-on types.

Edit: Must have been some sort of filter set at work. The pictures are fine here at home. My apologies.:)

The earliest zinc I saw were all riveted on clips. Now I'm seeing zinc and steel with molded on clips just like above. Makes sorting considerably harder if that is your thing...

Are all Zinc WW's marked with the ZN symbol?

I have a bunch of questionable WW's that are in with a bunch of WW's that I just got.

I am a babe in the woods to this casting stuff and am trying not to mess up my first experiance in future smelting.

Tom,
As you note from the first few pictures, many many Zinc weights do NOT have the Zinc markings. If the pictures did not come in for you, please leave a message and I will E-Mail them to you.

Note: With the sectional weights it is unlikely that they will be whole as depicted. You will often find two or three "parts" of the same weight; since the zinc is brittle and tends to break at the joints when removed from the rim.

I have a plethora of WWs that are marked "MC" or "P" but are not followed by Zn. Would these WWs be safe for use or are these designations for lead free WWs?

they are likely good clean lead. as you can see from the pics above, the MC, P, and C markings designate the profile on the back. essentially telling you the shape of rim that they fit on. lead, zinc and steel weights can all have those same codes on them; because they make weights for all different kinds of rims, regardless of the material the weight is made from.

I want to point out here that if you put a lead WW and a zinc WW (or steel WW) that both weigh the same, the zinc WW will be noticably larger. Good Luck

It's a real heartbreaker when you are sorting weights and you pick up a 4 ouncer and it goes "ting" when You thought you had a real gainer.
When in doubt, pinch it with a side cutter, you will know right away, they are hard as glass.
Also, if you miss one in the sort and you if don't go nuts with heat when you are smelting, they will just float to the top with the rest of the trash. You have about a 150 degree margin.
