Anyone had any experience with this powder in .45-70. I have good load data from Accurate for the 420gr. Lyman #457193, but I'm wondering how clean it burns, etc. My Handi Rifle is in the shop getting the trigger fixed so won't be shooting til next week. Thanks in advance. I punch holes in paper targets and hopefully, whitetails.

I bought a bunch of this many years ago. The lot I have is about like H-4831, and works well in my .300 Win. Mag, 338 Win. Mag, and 7MM Rem. mag., but I never tried it in 45/70. It burns as cleanly as H-4831, which means good at high pressure but I would think pretty dirty at 45/70 pressures. Still, slow powders can sometimes surprise you at low pressures. I've used WC 860 in my .308 Win. with cast boolits and got excellent accuracy although I had to put up with a lot of unburned powder.

Like 454PB, my 3100 is like H-4831. Several years ago, I used some in my .45/70 and it looked as if a heard of mice had gone up the barrel! :-) I went back to 3031 and 4198. -JDL

4831/3100 will get right with the program in the 45/70 but you have to use a primer charge under it to get rid of the mouse droppings.

That's true Bullshop as I tried some briefly. Don't remember what I used for a kicker powder, Unique probably, but it did clean up the left-overs and increased recoil to boot. -JDL

Bullshop - Any recollection of what you used as a "kicker"? I have Unique.
