I can answer the question of you making your money back, Yes you will. In very good condition in any caliber you will likely double your money at the least.

This isn't a price valuation, just interesting info from http://levergunscommunity.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27532 according to the Winchester polishing room records,
1952 ended at circa serial number 1,960,000
1953 ended at circa serial number 2,045,000
If you read the entire thread, the Winchester Polishing Room records indicate when the receiver was sent to the polishing room, which is where the serial number was applied. After this, it was sent to the assemble area, and may have sat around for quite a while before it was pulled from a bin and completed. BUT: "Unfortunately for all of the many collectors and interested people, all of the remaining pre-64 factory warehouse records (serial numbers 354,000 - 2,600,000+ were destroyed in a fire in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Undoubtedly, all of the caliber, and the Rifle versus Carbine production number ratios would change drastically if the records were available for serial numbers 354,000 - 2,600,298. The Polishing Room Serialization Record Books (PRSRBs) which contain nothing more than just the serial number, fortunately survive up to serial number 1,352,066, which was manufactured on December 29th, 1945."

I have one with serial #1000XXX, and somewhere (can't recall where) I found a web site that said it was made in 1927.

You stole it Mike. Pre 64s can bring $1000 in great condition to the right guy, depending
on caliber and bbl length, options. Even run of the mill pre-64 guns in good-excellent condition
can bring $5-600 or more these days. Condition and originality are everything.

Some of my best gun deals came from "going out of marriage" sales. You did really well on the Model 94 and will easily make double to triple your money on it.

Or, if it's a really good friend, you can hold it for him until he gets back on his feet and then just sell it back to him for what you paid him for it. I've done that a few times for good friends.

Hope this helps.

Mike, it should be stamped on the lower side of the barrel next to the receiver. All you would have to do is take the forward stock band screw out, slide the band off the stock, and slide the stock away from the receiver. I have a 1445XXX, and it was made in 47.. My dad's was made in 50,...
I would be inclined to hang onto it for the friend of the friend, and sell it back to him if he wants it, after his divorce is completed...

Good morning
If this rifle becomes a burden I will get in line also...
Me I would be Rejoicing and casting and reloading. That is a super opportunity that just does not happen real often.
