Hi all,

I've heard some mention about accurizing Marlins, does anyone have any links to real how-to information? Not just load workups.

In particular I have a 444SS that shoots great if kept cool. No problem hunting, but now that I am seriously into casting for it, the waiting period between shots is getting to be a PITA.

I've already made some progress by glass bedding the buttstock and putting on a Pachmayr recoil pad. That makes it more reliable and me more accurate, but not the gun itself.

I'm sure the magazine attachment is the major issue, but I'll read anything that's out there.

Thanks!

I don't see anything on that website that deals with the issue he has????

How long do you have to wait between shots? I can shoot 5 shots in my guide gun and still get a great group with out waiting for the barrel to cool.

I found a little bit in this article... http://www.levergun.com/articles/Race_Tuning.htm

It starts stringing low about the fifth shot and keeps low until cooled off. Timing between shots depends on the weather, but a couple minutes is usually plenty.

I bring along another rifle or two, and put up several targets.

Buy the McPherson book or get it on interlibrary loan. BvT

I shoot five shot groups in about 2 min. That gives me an idea of what my gun will do in a silhouette match. Wait a couple and do it again.

30 second ready, 2 minutes to shoot 5, another 2 minutes to score and reset targets and do it again.

Yea I don't rapid fire when target shooting but I do not take a lot of time either I would suspect take me a couple of min to shoot 5 rounds maybe a bit less. that seems like a long time to shoot 5 shots but that averages out to 24 seconds a shot. I think it may depend on what load and powder your shooting too. Some loads I suspect heat up the barrel a lot faster than others.

This is the sort of thing I'm looking for. Wish it had pictures:

Just wondering as Most Marlins are pretty darn accurate SO before you go changing any more things what about load work up what is your load and have you tried others? Mine (45/70 guide gun) shot great right out of the box with my load of 2400 and the Lee HB 405 grain bullet. I am sure other loads I may try may or may not shoot as good depending on the bullet and powder used.

I also have a Marlin 45/70 that doesn't have this issue.

I've had this gun about 15 years, through 3 stocks, 2 forends, and 2 scopes. It is now (after some work) very accurate except for the fact that it strings low when hot, and only when hot. The "some work" involved loose scope mounts and loose buttstocks, as well as putting a pachmayr pad on it and changing the toe angle.

I have several J-Word loads worked up that shoot very tight groups, as long as I space them out after the first 3 shots.

I have utter confidence in it while deer hunting, because I have never fired more than 2 shots at a time while hunting.

However, I have a lot of different cast boolit loads to go through, and the time constraint of waiting for the barrel to cool is going to get in the way. So, it is time to fix this issue.

I have several rifles that can do that. This is not one of them. Yet.
