I recently aquired a Supermax YCM-40 CNC 3 axes milling machine that I will be setting up for my ROCKDock™.

It's a Cat 40 tapered spindle and those tool holders definitly run with the big boys in cost. About 2lbs each I understand,.

Things is for now I have a collection of R8 collets and tooling with my WEBB (Bridgeport) mill, and I don't need the mass and precision the Cat 40's are famous for, for my docks.

Is anyone familiar with an adaptor? Mainly to get me going with the tooling I already own and the fact that I have a very nice face mill with R8 shaft that I need to use.

Cat 40 uses a drawbar as do R-8, seem lit it would be a little difficult. Pehaps something like this would help.

Pat,
I have a Cincinatti #2 that uses 40mt/cat taper tooling. I've gathered a fair collection by e-bay and other scrounging methods. I just had to be patient.
Your mill with the R-8 mount screwed into the face mill? Some are and the 40cat adapters are cheap enough.

If you need collets, ER collets are the way to go in my opinion. ER16 & ER32 will cover most requirements. ER collets will do anything R8s will do an only use 20-40% of an R8s length. The only adapters I've heard of are Morse taper.

Thanks for the posts above.

What I've gathered so far is a couple mentions of an R8 adaptor that uses a set screw. Not my favorite idea but maybe an option for the face mill. My face mill is a USA that's solid one piece R8.

THen someone blurbed a comment of a drawbar version that sucks up the R8 and cat 40 all together as one at the same time. This would be good but I can't find one as yet.

If anyone has some extra holders and would be interested in some horse trading, let me know.

This machine has a Kurt power draw bar which is very cool. Alas- no auto tool changer, but I'll just line up as many vise holders as I can get across the table and run multible parts at once. The table is real wide.

Love to have a VMC but not enough room, and not enough power to run one. Could not afford one anyway.

"R8 adapter that use a set screw" I think you mean these,

I think not what you are looking for.

Scb mentioned useing ER 32 and the link I posted in my first post was for just such a tool holder. The problem with having just one and a bunch of collets is that every tool you change you have to re-zero your "Z" axis, this will effectively double the amount of time you spend on a job. Whereas using multiple holders with tools already set it is just a matter of changing holders, push go. Of course I am stating the obvious, you already know this.

Yaw for what I need to do, I need a fixed tool in Z for sure. Don't need to add to the workload.

I've got to get some air to the machine and pull the holder in the mill. I think it is an ISO 40 taper. NTMB Cat 40. Cat, I just learned is from Catapiller Machine Company. They are the ones that developed the tooling for their machines.

I've seen some folks say it is Category, or Catalog- Nope... good old USA CAT!
