Set out to a local gun show just to get some 9x18 mak ammo for my cz82. Just before leaving spied a S&W 624 stainless 6.5" bbl in origional box with all papers and cleaning kit and screwdriver still in sealed plastic bag. And yes it followed me home. Not much on S&W's larger sized revolvers. Can someone tell me what size frame?. Think its an "N" frame. Need to get a holster for it. Thanks, Frank

Yes, "N" frame. a 6.5" 624 in the box recently followed me home too. :) I can't claim NIB anymore, it now has a whole 12 rounds down the tube..

Heavy metal, ok I'm not big on revolvers so how does one tell the difference?. Always wanted a 44 special so got this one. Now I gotta dig out the bag of 44 special brass I've been hoarding for who knows how long. Anything special wether round or square butt?. Frank

Technically the 624 is not an N frame but a G frame. The N frame is for a carbon blue verison and the G frame is the Stainless Steel version. The J frame is the carbon blue small frame and the E is the stainless steel verison. The K and L also have different letters for the stainless steel version. The X frame is only in stainless and the I frame is blue only as no stainless framed guns where built on that pattern.

It will fit in an N frame holster.

HMMMMMM. I have never heard that S&W calls the same sized frames by different
designations based only on the material.

What is the source of this information?

Heavy metal, took the grips off and its a square butt like my model 10. Grips were dated sept 18 1986 Frank.

The 624 is a premier grade revolver in my book. I have both the 6½" and the 4". They are both shooters. I mostly shoot the Skeeter load (7.5 grs of Unique behind a 250 gr Keith). As a general purpose load, it can hardly be beat.

They are one of the most "shootable" revolvers around.

Combat Diver--

Thanks for that frame-size info on the stainless S&Ws. Some years back, I had heard or read that the stainless revo frames had other designators, but no info on what those designators actually were. Much appreciated, sir!

I'm another lucky dog with a S&W Model 624 x 6.5". It came with me this year to NCBS, and I fired it in the Team Handgun Match using (what else?) Skeeter's Load--7.5 grains of Unique underneath Lyman #429421, and sparked with CCI 300 primers in W-W 44 Special brass.

Al, is this a gas checked bullet or plain based. Frank

In case Al doesn't see your question, the Lyman #429421 is the classic Keith style semi-wadcutter boolit design, it's a plain base.

Here is my performance bullet loaded with the Skeeter load (7.5 grs of Unique). They are cast from a Mihec H&G #503 Hollow Point mould. For general shooting, I use the same bullet in solid form from a MiHec six cavity mould. The alloy is 50/50 WW's/lead with 2% tin. This is a malleable mix that expands well at low velocities.

S&W had a recall on certain serial #'s in the late 80's of this gun. The wrong SS was used and a few failures ensued. I e-mailed them on mine and confirmed the serial # was OK. My gun is long gone but the reply was free, I have heard that since they are no longer made the replacement is a 44 mag.

I was curious as to the round butt / square butt thing as a means of dating the gun. I don't know about the current run of "Classic" N frames ( or G, X or I frames) but the general N frame got changed to the K L frame shape in the early 90's I think.

Grip date certainly confirms 1980's manufactur. Be aware this gun will require real N frame grips if you decide to change out the ones you have.

I expect you to have fired this by now if so how does it work?

Heavy Metal, actually haven't shot it yet. Was out looking for some factory ammo to try it out. No success. Thanks for the tip regarding the pachmayer grips. Frank
