I just started to get into casting for smokeless rifles. I've been casting for years for blackpowder.(pure lead) What is a good alloy for 405-450 grain .458 cal. bullets at 1700-1900 fps muzzle velocity? The rifle is a marlin 1895gs, it likes oregon trail 405's at 1800 fps now, but they are way to hard. Thanks in advance, Stubert

At the speeds you intend to load for, you probably need to use wheelweights...or harder.

In my Siamese Mauser I push air cooled WW GC bullets to 1800-1900 fps without problems and very good accuracy. A 1-16 tin/lead alloy GC bullet is good to about 1600 fps. These are 458483s and weith 385 -400 grs depending on alloy. I push the Lee 500 gr GCFP to 2050 fps with water quenched WWs. The Lee 500 gr GCFP cast hot of magnum shot and water quenched is pushe at 1750 fps with excellent expansion characteristics in big game. I use Hornady GCs and Javelina lube. Most of these loads are pushed with 4895. All of these loads let you know you have pulled a trigger.
