Anyone know if a 340 similar has the same shank and thread pitch as the 110/10 series rifle barrels? Can they be swapped?

Thanks,Tim

From NRA Gunsmithing Guide ----- Savage m340 et al = .850 dia. 18v tpi.

Ya didn't really think it would be that easy, did ya? (FYI- I made a mistake once and ASSUMED they were the same and ordered a barrel for a 340. Boy was my face red.)

What barrel are ya looking for?

The 340 only came in 4 calibers, 30-30 being the most popular I believe.

A posting in want to buy might net you a good used one.

The only ones I am aware of are 30-30, 225 Win, 222 & 223. Any others?

I have a pair of 30-30's a 222 and a 22 Hornet. The 225 Win. is one I'd like to get but haven't found one when I had cash.

You mention the 223. Have you seen a factory 223 in a 340 or 840?? I've had a few people say they have them but think it's a rechamber of the 222. Which would be easy to do.

Reason I think that is every source I have for the 340 only shows the four calibers I mention in the first line of this post.

However I do know every manufacturer at one time or another has done "Special Runs" So real curious if someone has a factory marked 340 in 223.

It also wouldn''t be the first time I was wrong about something either! Basically I'm just trying to satisfiy a curisoity.

22 Hornet. Saw a Deluxe Hornet in primo condition at a show this spring. $400.00, seemed reasonable but I was/am broke. I want that rifle!

The Hornet I have is just the plain jane gun and, sadly, was stored in a closet for years.

The barrel and frame have some external pitting but the barrel insides are like new.

I bought it and the 30-30 for $275.00 out the door 4 years ago and thought I did well.

Picked up the 222, in almost excellent condition, 6 months earlier for $225 out the door.

As I posted earlier have never seen a 225 Winchester chambering any place but on Gun Broker. To be honest I don't think a 340 is worth $600 to $700 unless it comes with a keg of beer and a redhead to fill my glass!

There was a 225 at Grays Gunshop in Lisbon NY awhile back. Not sure if it's still there. It wasn't super expensive IIRC- maybe 350-400.

Try and get someone to ship any gun into CA!

Seriously pretty much every guy on gun broker has a statement saying he will not sell or ship to CA.

Can't say as I blame them. What dealers are left are so gun shy they either won't stock but the bear minimum or they are a chain store that won't talk about transfering a used gun from out of state and are bummed you won't buy a new one from them!

To that end I did go to Gun Broker this morning and saw a bunch of 340 ,325, 840's for sale

A few real nice buys on both 22 Hornet and 222 rifles. No surprise there was a 340 in 225 and $695 was the starting bid.

At no time did I see a 223 rifle but I did see a mag marked 223 so Savage must have made one at some time Just never seen one!

The only 223's I have seen were on Gunbroker so I never handled one. A hornet would be a good find.

I have a 340 in .223, also two 30-30's and a 38-55 (rebore--sorry, not factory). Almost bought a Hornet a few years back, for $299, but I have a TCR barrel in that caliber.

I always thought that 38-55 or 375 Win would be a perfect match for that gun. I almost bought one years ago to rebore but got distracted by other guns.

I have a 340 in factory .223. It shot pretty well with a variety of loads. Then it got caught in basement flood for 4 days and was left for ten days after the water was pumped out. (I was out of town when it happened.) The barrel has some visible pitting in one area. After trying 16 different loads, I have one that shoots 1"- 5 shot groups at 100 yards. RP Brass, CCI-400s, RP 50gr PSP, 26.0gr IMR4895. Match grade bullets, hollow points, polymer tips, nothing shot well- except the RP.

I'll have to check into the replacement barrels at Numrich.

Years ago I had a savage 340 in 225 like idiot I traded it for something else and have not seen another in decades. If I do it will get bought unless I can find another rifle in 225 first.
I do have one in 222 and enjoy the heck out of it.

the barrel shank is small enough you can use a mod 70, or remington, or about any takeoff and thread it for the 340
