i recently purchased a mihec 2 cav. 400gr gc in .500 mag. i have only cast in alum. molds and have become accustomed to casting with the temps. required with alum. what can i expect from brass? are there different traits, do you have to prep cavitys etc. any advice will be appreciated. thanks

What to expect? Heaven. Brass is so easy to use it's not even comparable to aluminum or iron. Don't touch the cavities (you shouldn't be putting crud in your cavities in the first place!) just let it come up to heat and enjoy.

Your alloy temp, which directly effects the mold temp, may need to be cooler vs what you have been running with the aluminum molds. Brass molds hold heat better and may not need the alloy to be as hot. All this assuming your casting style and tempo doesn't change.

I have an old brass/bronze Yankee that's a clone of teh Lyman 311413 and it's the easiest casting mould I've ever used./beagle

Brass is somewhere between aluminum and iron with respect to heat retention, so you'll be adjusting your rhythm accordingly. But brass is machined so much more easily than iron, so the cavity finish is (usually) much better than iron. Personally, it is my favorite.

I have a Mihec HP brass mold and it is a joy to use. I wish all my molds were brass.
