I ran across a source of lead, wheel weights, lead pipe, babbit lead. Its 1000 lbs in all, at $.30-$.40/lb thats a good chuck of change. What do you think? should i go for it? all? some? I only have about 180# in my personal alloy inventory. I shoot large cal pistol stuff, nothing over 1200fps.

I'd get it all and sell some if needed.

Welcome to Castboolits Steel185,

Well, we don't know what area your in or how difficult it is in that area to get lead. We don't know how much shooting you do or how long your supply (180 pounds) would last you. For example, if your 97 years old and shoot up about 10 pounds of alloy a month you probably have plenty of alloy.

So . . . the best we could do is tell you what we would do rather than what you should do.

I'd buy it, melt it down seperately and label each ingot what it is, where it came from etc. When it's time to cast boolits, it can be blended according to what it will be used for.

Hope this helps some,

Rick

It is like money in the bank.
I would buy the lot, even if I had to part with a gun to get it.

I guess what I'm really needed to know is are these prices decent? Good? great? The local scrap yard is selling for .70/lb, other scrap yards further away are selling for .80/lb, obviously this deal is less, but what are you guys out there buying lead at?

It's a very good deal, from where I sit.

Scrap yards around metro areas are paying about $0.60 per pound on lead.
Buy it all and resell what you don't want for a profit.

Buy it all. Cleaned & fluxed goes for about $1.00 per # shipped. You should be able to keep half and sell the other half at a profit!

I am trying to stock pile, both free and pay for it. There has not been much to be had. I did score a good load from fixah here on CB. Thank you.

180 pounds would last me... about 5 months.. if I were JUST pouring 185's.. or about 6800 boolits.

The action shooting game eats up lead like crazy.

If all you do it plink now and then, it should last you a while.. but at that price .30-.40 a #, I would snag it all and sell or trade for what I wanted.. which is mostly clip on WW lead.

You can't get too much lead. It's still available now, but that's a big IF in the future.
There will come a day,(not too far off) when you will kick yourself for not making the deal.
Do you remember $8. powder, and $10. a brick primers at every source?

Money in the Bank! Get it all, and store it until you need it. You can also trade/sell some if need be.

I agree. When you look at what a bucket of ww sells for, with all the scrap & non useable stuff, 30c-40c/# for good alloy is a fine deal IMO. Then again, I live in lead poor kommiefornia.:x

You have way too little in your inventory. You need all of this. Buy it all, you can't go wrong.

180 pounds X 7000gr / 250gr = 5,040 boolits.

Assuming 1000 Lbs net X 7000gr / 250grs = 28,000 boolits.

You need this.

update: So i scraped together about $200 and a set of Lee dies, i got in package trade and couldn't use, and went to get as much as I could. It turns out no one else in town wanted any (or knoew about it) and his employer wasn't paying for his move across the state, so he wanted to dump about 1300-1400#. I told him all "i have is $200 and these dies (which he actually needed) but I'll take it if you are going to leave it."

I walked away with all the lead for $200 and a set of dies. Even if you claim the dies are worth $50 used, that comes out to $.17/lb, not a bad haul.

It worked out well, he still had 1500# he kept for himself, and I got a deal. Also i found out why when ever i went to a tire shop "some guy just took a bunch of wheel weights", he had been busy. Maybe in the coming months with him gone, there will be more wheel weights for free.

At 17c/#, that is almost free compared to what some have to give for alloy. Good job. Get all you can, worse case scenario, you make ingots & sell it for $1/# to those less fortunate.[smilie=l:

You should be able to get 3.00 a pound for the babbit all day. A buck a pound for lead.

Depending on where you stand if you buy it you could sell half (500 pounds) keep 500 pounds for free, and pocket $200-300. Does that break it down for you?
