Was searching craig's list and found the following listing.

"Date: 2010-05-25, 9:37AM EDT
Reply to: sale-e48ng-1758413112@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

Chance to make some money or get linotype metal at a bargain. Got around 2000 pounds. If you take all at once you get a real bargain. Selling on ebay for $1.00. Want it for maybe half!!?? Ground floor where is, as is. US cash only. Selling minimum of 20 pounds at a time for 75 cents per pound. More you get the more you save. Got a Linotype for sale also."

Somebody is going to have some fun.

Sorry...found it in Maine.

If it had been in Arizona I would have just bought it. ;-) The ad is gone so somebody must have jumped on it. Hopefully it was a boolit caster.

We have a few members who live or post from that area. I certainly hope it was them who jumped on it.

As an addition to a thread that has about petered out, I won't buy lino that has been ingotized - must be in lines, or mono's, in the case of monotype. There might be an unscrupulous person out there that would dilute the lino...

I'm going up to Belfast to buy some on Sunday. The guy has dropped the price to 50 cents a pound.

Linotype has a distinct feature of going from solid to liquid at 425 degrees F, and vice versa. It will be very easy to tell if it's real.

This is a print shop that shut down. The guy is selling his linotype machine also. Those things operate at a tight temperature range. I am sure it's real lino.

I might buy all of it while I am there.

The ad dropped off Craig's list pretty quick so I figured it sold quick, but maybe not. Buy all you can afford and then buy more.

I'll report in on Sunday night, and let you know how it all went.

I still emailed him to see if he had any left. I'd like to add to the 300lbs of mono type I already have.

Our trip there has been rescheduled to Tuesday, and we have already discussed (with him) that we are buying ALL of his metal, 2000 pounds or so. That may be why the listing dropped out.

BTW, a lot of the metal is still in the machine.

Excellent, glad to hear it.

If you have to take it out of the machine how about some photos so everybody can see where linotype really comes from.

Excellent idea! Will bring camera and take pics if the guy allows it.

That probably explains why he didn't reply to my email. I would love to see pics too, and if you have any extra left over let me know.

He emailed me back and said that you were coming on tuesday, but if you didn't that he would call me. I told him I'd love to have 300 lbs if you didn't take it all.

Yeah, we are going on Tuesday. Morning!

And, we 're buying all that he has which he now estimates to be more like 1200 pounds. (Maybe he's been selling some). . .

Apparently, some of the lino is in pages and galleries.... That means the metal (some of it) is in actual type, which is neat. Bringing plenty of buckets!

Slight correction.
Linotype melts/goes solid at 464 Fahrenheit, not 425. ;)

Not sure where I got that number, but I'll accept the 464 F, which is a heck of a lot lower than the 600+ degrees that pure lead requires. It's a good test to see if it's really linotype, which was the question posed.
