First, I am new to the forum. I have come across it a bunch in my Google searches in the past. Yesterday I was talking with a friend and he told me I should pop on here. So here I am :). I have never casted bullets before but I would like to start as I shoot a lot and cheaper is better. But my question is this. My local shop sells boxes of 500 bumblebee cast bullets for 29 bucks. Seems cheap but there.round nose and I would like a SWC truncated cone style. I reload for my 10mm and like the nice holes the SWC make. Can I re swage these Into the shape I want. I am a machinest and so I can make a press And or dies if needed. Thanks guys

Yep! The CH 40 cal die would serve you well to reshape the cast boolits, unless they are fairly hard cast. Check some of the 40 cal from 9mm threads as this should give you an idea of what they would look like.

Welcome to the sight. All you ever need to know can be learned here.

Good Shooting

Jt if youre re-swaging commercial cast it will take a lot of pressure. If youre a machinist check out the "Lets make a swage press" thread.

If you need more details on the dies let me know and Ill get you the info. A die to do lead bullets is pretty straight forward

Thanks, ya there cast bullets I bought from the store. Does any one know how much force is needed to do what I want. I have a large air cylinder that produces like 2500pounds of force. Would that be enough our would I need to connect it to a lever to increase it.

Im not sure if 2500 pounds would get it (1.25tons) I dont know what "tonnage" the hyd swage setups put out, I think its a good bit more than that

So much hay is made about using only pure soft lead cores. Well, I tried it myself with bullets cast in Lyman #2 alloy and they swaged nicely. Just go slow and add incremental pressure to the press handle. Bullets on the left are Lyman's 358477, and the right are Lyman 358495s.

As a machinist, the world is at your feet. For what you are wanting, your swage press could be made very simple indeed. Have a look at a lubrisizer and beef it up and simplify it - you don't need the lube part.

I make dies from 8.8 grade bolts or 4140 if I can get some.

Keep us posted.:drinks:

Why not just cast your own and have what you want? Seems much easier to me...Buck

I agree Buck, I was re-swaging those to try and get some use out of them. Just something Im playing with really.

If I sort out a better way to lube them I would like to just swage some (not cast/lube/swage)

It is a slick way to get a hollow point without all the issues of casting them

JT, you make yourself a decent swage press, I may just have to toss you a comission on a second. :D

Glad you decided to check this place out.
