Is there any ammo boxes out there to hold the rounds tips up ?

Not that I know of. Check Buffalo Arms. Maybe they have someone making a custom box. Mine is made from a wooden index card box. I just made dividers for it.
The 4x6 box worked best.

I had the same thoughts on the 410 boxes. I did find at Cabelas, their WSM 50 round ammo boxes will hold the 45-70 rim down with a bit of room to spare with a 405. I don't know if the 500's would be to long or not.

My local baitshop:
XL20S
J&J Rifle to 600 NE Size
2.60
Email - buy@huntingtons.com

I use these for my .577-.450 Martini Henry.
Slip top 25 round 20 ga boxes work also.
They rattle.
Cheers from Darkest California,

Harpman, try either lowe's or home depot. They sell a wood box that just might be what you want with a little class. Last time I looked it was about $20 bucks. Comes with a lift out top tray and could easily be modified with a piece of oak (again lowe's or home depot) with suitable holes. The box is approximately eight inches or so high, about eight inches or so wide and about 12-14" long. Made in china but nicely finished and has recessed wood carry handle. Since I'm looking to get into black powder I now use mine to store the gadgets one accumulates along the way. Hope this helps, Frank

I have made several 45/70 head size cartridge boxes. Just get a wooden box of the appropriate size (I used cigar humidors that didn't make the cut in final inspection) and cut a wooden base for inside. Then layout (I used graph paper) a drill pattern and transfer it to the wooden base. Drill holes with a "Forstner bit" so that the hole is flat bottomed. A piece of 2x10 of the correct size worked for me. You don't want the box to be too big - 100 loaded rounds is enough in one box (they get heavy).

An alternate way is to use layers of plywood glued to gether to get the needed thickness. YOu can also drill clear through and cover the bottom of the block with
1/4" plywood after drilling.

Be sure and secure the wooden base to the sides of the box. Many wooden boxes were never anticipated that they would have to support so much weight. The weight of 100 rounds of 45/70 will just pull the base off the box. However, if you screw the inside base to the sides of the box, then run your carry handles to the sides you will NEVER have a problem.

MTM Case-Gard H-50 will hold my .40-65 rounds boolit up. I think they may have revised their naming system.

I bought one of these awhile back from Lowe's. It's my normal range box and my shooting buddies all commented on how cool it looked. For $20 bucks you can't beat it. Note of caution though; keep an eye on the hinges, handle, tray ends and tray bottom. Hmmm, actually the whole box. The Chinese used a weak glue and the box started to come apart after some use. No big deal, a little Elmer's Carpenters glue, some brads, a few hammer whacks and it is as good as new.

I have some 20 round slip tops clear light blue that are marked J&J 45/70 to 600 N.E. They do take a 45/70 rim down. I think they are now available from Midway.

The chart http://www.mtmcase-gard.com/rch-50-2005.htm says 348 Winchester will fit booit up in the H 50 XL.

According to Cartridges of the World, first edition, the .348 has a .610 rim and 2.80 overall. The .45-70 has a .600 rim and 2.70 overall. My Starline 40-65 brass measures .600 rim COW says it is .604 with an overall length of 2.48 which would have been with the old 260 grain boolit. Mine are more like 2.86 overall with a heavier boolit.

chuebner, Soon as it cools off I plan on removing the handle and installing a big brass handle on it. My box is still in my toy room and I still have some solid brass hinges from when I had a boat. Good suggestions. Frank

I bought some MTM boxes at Gander Mountain; the top of the box specifically states 45-70, 45-90, 450 Marlin. The stock number is RF 22. They hold 22 rounds bullet up. www.mtmcase-gard.com Emery

Harpman,

Wills has it right- MTM H 50 XL holds 45-70 bullet up or down, w/removable insert that can also serve as a loading block, in a pinch.
I like them, when you don't need to be carrying 100/box. Not a lot of dealers keep them on the shelf, but can be easily ordered.

I don't know if it is a good idea! On hot days, I would rather not worry about lube going down towards the powder.

I dont always crimp, and dont want to take a chance those little "fingers" that hold the boolit might pull it away from the wad.

Here is a thought
