I just received my Pietta 1858 Army.I'm really impressed. The last cap & ball
revolver I bought was a Colt Army in the late 1970's.

It was made in Italy also, but by who I have not a clue. The main spring broke
& I can't seem to find another,so I will most likely make one.

But there is no comparing the quality of the two guns.I have read alot of
late on the Pietta gun reviews. Most reviews were in fact very good & a few
not.

But they have come a long way in quality from the past as many things have.
CNC machining is in part some of it as is CMM QC work.

The fit & finish is very good for a low cost gun. What really got me as to how
accurate these guns are.

I still must fine tune it, but off hand at 20 yd's I'm hitting 6 out of 6 on a milk
jug.Thats not bad pulling the thing out of the box & shooting it.This thing
is a :Fire: to shoot!

The odds are that the mainspring from any of the manufacturers, Pietta, Uberti, etc. that make the model you have will fit your gun. Most if not all of the Colt revolvers of modern manufacture were supposedly made by Uberti for Colt. The mainspring should be interchnageable for your particular model.

When I purchased my 1858 Remington I was content with shooting round balls from it. Then I wanted to try a conical so I bought the Lyman 450229 which has been long discontinued. It's a hollow base bullet weighing 142 grains or more. What a difference. I still have that mold and shoot it from my Ruger Old Army. It's very accurate, but a pain to cast one at a time especially being hollow base.

philthephlier it's funny just before reading your reply I found a place that sells Pietta gun
parts & I ordered a main spring.I'm hoping it will fit this gun.If it does not I'm only out
$11.

It is not worth my time to make another for that. Thanks for the help thou.

PICTURES, your can't just come in bragging about a sweet new gun and not show us, it's cruel. A picture of your new toy would be much appriciated by those of us who are Cap and Ball Poor.

Fly,

Try either of the following places

http://www.dixiegunworks.com/

http://www.vtigunparts.com/

They carry "antique" black powder gun parts.

Good luck,

Carl

Thank you Bull Schmitt, thats some great stuff.I just can't get enough of reading on the
ole guns of that time.

I guess being a retired tool & die maker, I look at stuff in the way of how it was made at the time.
Those folks did wonders with the tools they had on hand.

Thanks Fly
