Hello,

Came over here from leverguns.com after Steveb told me this is were its at for all my cast bullet questions.

I've cast a few rounds and will be getting the gas checks and setting up for lube here in about 4-5 days.

I live in Michigan, hunt, fish and trap. I've pretty much just one rifle that I do everthing with and thats a custom marlin 336 in 30-30.

Work as a Machinist but will be switching careers soon.

welcome wcf3030: I doubt there's more than 400-500 members here with a 336 of some sort in the battery. might even find a thread or three with chatter about microgroove yea and nay.[smilie=1: Onceabull

Good to have you here. Bullet casting and loading will greatly increase the utitlity and enjoyment of your Marlin 30-30. Just remember to clean ALL the jacketed bullet metal fouling out of the barrel before shooting cast. There really is no need to shoot jacketed in the 30-30. You can get all the 30-30 has to give with cast bullets.

.............WCF3030, glad to have ya aboard. The Thoity Thoity is one of the best cast cartridges around, which is probably no news. A suggestion for another which should be common in your neck of the woods would be a 336 in 35 Rem.

Welcome to the Cast Boolit Asylum--the "other" CBA. (I belong to both).

One of the gunrag standard screeds is to pose a question about "If you could only have one rifle, it would be......" Well, a lever 30-30 would definitely be on a lot of people's short list, and at the top in some cases. It is one of The Three Thirties that dominate the hunting fields and target courses in this country and a lot of the world--30-30, 308, and 30-06. The 30-30 might be the best of those three using the poured boolits.

One thought has occurred to me from time to time regarding this caliber--why not try the 190 grain soft points from the 303 Savage in the 30-30? I can see no reason why those "heavy for caliber" projectiles wouldn't elevate the performance of the 30-30 the same way these bullets do in the 303 Savage. A cast flatnose of 190-200 grains would be kinda cool, too.

A cast flatnose of 190-200 grains would be kinda cool, too.We got one, Al. It's the RCBS 30-180-FN double cavity. In ww alloy and RTL, mine weigh 195 grs. They shoot fine in my Model 94 30-30. Wish I had a Lee aluminum copy!! I don't like iron molds.

I run this bullet a little over 1900 fps with Varget.

Those would'nt be your heartattack loads?
I've asked about them before.
That is my next buy for a mould.

Welcome WCF3030.
I agree with Junior on the RCBS 30 180 FN as cast weight is 187 grains and, when pushed with 35 grains of H-414, produces an average speed of 1970 fps out of my 24" 336. This is close enough to the .303 Savage for gubment work :-).

Sam Fadala ( http://http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811719057/ref=sr_11_1/002-1148147-3462429?ie=UTF8) use to use the 190-grain silver tip from the 303 Savage. I've looked for that bullet or round and was not able to find it.
Since then I've be tinkering with the 180gr honardy Interloc with some good results.

But I'll most likly end up with something resembling Junior's "heart attack" load.

Hey Steve staying cool down there.
Where looking at another 97 degree day with 110 degree index.
We spent 2 1/2 hours in the river yesterday. Everthing is moving so slow I caught a sucker and a 19in Rainbow with my hands. Let them go.

Welcome aboard. The 30-180-FN is a winner in the .30/30 for sure. I think mine runs about 191 grains gas checked and ready to go. Normally, I shoot loads of the 30-150-FN RCBS in the .30/30 from a mould that we've hollow pointed. Makes a handy plinking/varmint round and a general all around bullet.

Now, bullet casting and a machinist background go together like eggs and bacon. You can make so many neat casting/sizing tools and mould modifications. I'm sure you'll enjoy the hobby as much as we do.

Just take everything here with a grain of salt. There are no liars here but some do stretch things a mite......../beagle

WCF3030, check out castpics for some 30-30 loads. sundog

Oh, forgot to mention -- I'm getting kinda partial to the RCBS 30-150-FN for the 30-30.

Junior, that RCBS pattern might be good in a lot of the 30 calibers. I do like the RCBS molds' user-friendliness as casting tools, for sure.

WCF3030,

Welcome to the forum. :drinks:

Great folks here with an amazing amount of collective knowledge.

As for a heavier bullet in the .30-30, I will cast another vote for the 180 RCBS. I bought my mold back in the early 1980's when I was a lot younger (seems almost like yesterday) and have used it ever since then along with several other .30 caliber molds.

Bullets from my mold weigh 189grs. in w.w. + 2% tin alloy with a gas check on board. A nice mid-range load is either 15 grs. of 4227 or 4759 for about 1,500 f.p.s. with great accuracy.

For full power loads, I like a capacity load of either W760 or H414 (same powder)
which goes 2,120 f.p.s. in my 336A (24" bbl.). I do heat treat the bullets for this load or cast them from 50/50 lino / w.w.

Enjoy!
