while sorting out a bucket of ww's, found some marked AL, others marked MC and others marked AL MC. Wondering what if anything these marks mean. Is it possible the AL means aluminum? All of them cut real easy w/lineman's cutting pliers. wayne h

Wayne,
AL and MC denote the companies that produced them.

Posting these as examples. The one with no markings at the bottom of #3 is flexible, like foam tape.
the large flat ones "15" and "25" in that pic seem to be steel.

Some of the markings other than weight (1oz), may indicate what type of rim (the clip style) it was meant for?

Has anyone encountered any zinc that did not have a Zn on it?

The AL's go on aluminum rims. Most if not all of them are lead.

the marks are designations for different rim types, the marks seem to mostly be ignored by the users.

Which is why I like to scout the off ramps of the interstate highways. I find lots of clipons at the end of most exit ramps.

So answer this questions for a newbie to wheel weights and casting. How do you all tell which weights are lead and whick are zinc? I do know how to tell the stick ons! lol

Tom who has a bucket full to get sorted and doesn't want to throw away any good ones

Tom,

Keep your temp aroung 650 to 675 and the zinc and steel will float and not melt. Works great for me and is much faster than sorting.

Some of the zinc stick on weights have a symbol on them like a serpentine. others have the Zn. i use a magnet when I am sorting to check the ends of the clip ons, you can tell the iron ones, they usually have a Fe on them. all the clips are steel so they attract but you can tell the difference when the whole weight is magnetically attracted. the zinc and steel weights sound different when you drop them on thier ends too, they ping and the lead ones thunk. Then do as Muddy Creek Sam says and you will find the ones you missed and not poison your melt...

I check them with a old set of side cutters. The zinc and iron ones are much harder. Then keep the temp down when I smelt and look for floaters, but I haven't had any yet as I have successfully culled all them in the past.
