I'm going to a 200 grain boolit (311299) from a 180 (LEE). My go to load is 20 grains old (square can) 2400. I get about 1700 fps. If I want to keep that velocity or more, I'll need more powder. "J" bullet loads typically the heavier the bullet the less powder. I'm guessing because of case capacity.

Do I go by velocity with my 2400 or is there a limit to how much fast powder I can use?

I also have unique, Herco and 3031.

I " assume " that your 03=A3 is still chambered in 30 - 06 ?

If you're looking for speed, it may be time to switch over to IMR - 4895 vs. the 2400.

If you choose to try 4895, I'd start with 27.0 grs. with your 200 gr. bullet and move up a grain at a time ( possibly loading 10 rds with 27.0 , 10 rds with 28.0 , so on, and son on ) until you reach the speed / accuracy combination that you're looking for.

I also have unique, Herco and 3031. Like Ben says but since you have 3031 why not try that? I can't advise since I don't have a 30-06. I can only relate to what I have done with my 303 Brit and in that I got good accuracy with a 220gr gas checked smooth sided boolit over 35.5grs AR2208/Varget - about 1800fps. Laod density was about 85%. It might not be wise to load to that velocity with a similar powder in a much larger case like the 30-06.

Increasing the powder charge to get the same velocity is good logig in your case but it will raise chamber pressure and possibly cause boolit failure. Maybe not.

I've had some success in my Garand using that bullet and SR 4759. I get about 2000 fps. I don't remember my load but it isn't match winning--though most of that is due to the nut behind the buttplate. No it doesn't cycle the action and yes it is very gentle. I'm thinking of switching to 4895 or 3031 myself.

I would let the rifle tell you what the velocity should be with that bullet, unless you have a need for that exact velocity.

If you still want to use 2400 I would start about 16 grs. and work up and see what happens. If it doesn't work then go to your 3031.

I use 30gr of IMR3031 and shoot a 225gr boolit out of my 30-06.

Hello MajorRick. Welcome to our family. Good to have you aboard. I trust you have the opportunity to do some long range shooting across the open spaces. Our area down here in southern Peru has alot of open deset.. no vegetation and if I want I have several areas where there is nothing out to the next ridge line. Remember to duck and God keep you safe.

You are reaching the upper end of 2400s usefulness. I agree with others, it is time to go to another powder if you want more velocity.
