Good morning
You really do not need a bunch if you are willing to sacrifice just one.
Mr. Roper in his outstanding book on handgun shooting adressed the problem of too short front sights with this easy fix.
With a fine dremel cutoff wheel ( or fine jewlers saw) slice into the front side horizontally cutting from the rear to the front of the front sight. The cut can be about 1/4 of the way from the top of the front sight. Cut about 80 % towards the front edge but leave enough metal to act as a pivot point. Now with a thin blade (small screw driver) you can pry the upper portion of the front sight up to the right height. After the adjustment you can solder the hole shut or expoxy or JB Weld or hotglue....
I did my Colt New Service and a Colt Police Positve Special with no regrets. Both are NON Collectors so if you feel I have done an atrosity Please send donations to my sanity fund.

Well, this is not what im after.
I have seen some sightblades that are adjustable, it can be raised or lowerd by hand in 3 or 4 different heights.

S&W used to offer a sight on the Model 29 10 inch guns that could be set for 4 different ranges.

This was aimed at the sillywet games and, of course, you were supposed to set up for each stage in a match.

Saw these for sale at Numrich and I think I also saw a similar sight in the Brownell's catalog.

Hope this is what your looking for.

That's a silhouette sight. It has four independently adjustable settings.

The S&W custom shop would probably the place to call.

Now that I think about it I believe they also ffered that same sight on the L frame guns for a little while.

S&W custom shop may be the only place to have the right one!

The sight was available on several S&W models including the 686.

More gun porn from Jerry L. :groner:

I have a love affair with the Smith 586/686 but can't stand their RR/WO sights and the silhouette sight has always demanded a premium price that I wasn't willing to pay.

I finally found a 6" 686 at the local porn emporium and have it on lay-away as we speak. I'll have to work some OT to bail it out, but it will soon be mine.

Great looking collection Jerry.

Well, I suppose I can take a few photos and measure the time if it is of interest when I fit the one that I recived today.

Just curious as to how much hassle it really will be, if you can estimate the time that will be fine. I was really interested in the changes you'd have to make to get it to fit.

Looks like you have to remove the old sight down to the first portion of the rib, and I don't think thats pinned on a S&W, and then make an area for the adjustment "dial" to go and then drill some pin locating holes for the sight base.

I'm thinking 4 hours plus some mill work. Always interested in this kinda work please post a picture or two if you can.

I did this on my FA .475 linebaugh. I located the center dilled and tapped for 4-40 thread.
I then ground a 4-40 caphead screw to the right profile. I then made a guage for the verious heights needed. A little dab of bees wax on the thread will keep the screw from moving on it's own! This looks something like the bead on a shotgun but adjustable up and down! Now I have the express sight on my wheel gun and kept the bead profile but there is no reason you cant make it square if needed? This worked very well for me at a cost of about $12.00 for a tap drill and screw. Sorry I dont have any pixs for you.

Not 100% sure but I think Wichita made these at one time. But it was the rear sight that was 4 position adjustable.
Wiegand may have als o made them.

Nice pic's Piece!

Thanks for remembering to post them. So far it looks pretty straight forward, mill and drill.

If your in it 5 hours already you'll have 10 in it before your done!

What is left to do is to drill holes for the pins and some polishing, probably 1,5 more hours. Well lets see if I have the time to finish it tonight.
The stainless steel was not very funny to mill in, I had to go and buy carbide mills to get it working.
