Been looking a long time for a .30 cal bench gun. Turns out my best friend has had a Ruger .308 Varmint in the closet for a long time. He has the same gun in 25-06. Before he started shooting NBRSA BR he shot Club Cast Shoots at the old San Gabriel Range where he and I ran the NBRSA BR Shoots before they closed in 2006. He shot both the .25 and the .30 at the Cast Shoots.

I asked him today if he had seen any Springfields at the Arizona Gun Shows for sale. He said yeah allot of junk for high prices. When I asked him if he knew of any factory 30's for sale he mentioned his Ruger. I asked him if he wanted to sell it. Turns out he was going to take the gun to the gun show to sell it. He's a smith so he has done some work on it like a bed job,and installed a Canjar set trigger. After he hee hawed about price I finally got him to commit. I used to be a gun dealer and him being a smith we look at gun values differently. I always get my price. He's selling me the gun for $400. He will bring it over in September when we go to Visalia to shoot BR.

The reason I'm buying the gun is that I cast 11 molds in 30 cal. Now I only have a Model 70 30-06 so I was looking for a 30 cal bench gun preferably a .308 to shoot all my Cast with. I will shoot some Cast with the 30-06 but the .308 will see most of the Cast. The .308 case size is what I was looking for for a Cast gun.

Any guys out there shoot .308 Cast. I have a lot of numbers like 311413, 311466, 31141, 311467, 311284, 311299.

Here are some photos of one of my favorite .30 cal. bench rifles.
It is a 308 WIn., VZ - 24 , 98 Mauser with an A & B stainless F-54 stainless , flutted barrel. It has a 3/4 pound Timney trigger in it. The rifle has about $800 worth of Leupold Vari X III optics on it. Tapered cross hair with dot 6.5 X 20 X 50 mm with 30 mm tube.
Rifle is glass bedded ( by me ) and the barrel " floats " after a 2" pad in front of the receiver. The rifle has .003" head space.

A real joy to shoot off the bags.

And YES.........it is a shooter !

Ben, that is a sweet looking rifle, and obviously a good shooter, too.

Southern Son :

I've got a good bit of $$$ in this one, but I don't regret a penny of it.
It is a great shooter and one of my favorites.
