I found a local Ubirti 1885 Highwall 45-70 with a 30" barrel, tang rear sight and globe front sight in great shape for $700. I think they have a 20" twist. I have been thinking of getting into 500 meter BPCR shooting and was wondering if this rifle will shoot worth a hoot at long range. I have heard that 18" twist is required to stabalize 500+ grain bullets. Will this rifle work for BPCR or would I be disapointed?

First let me say that ranges of 600 yards are considered mid range not long range. Long range is 800, 900 and 1000 yards. Now as for your other question. I have a Uberti 1874 Sharps with a 1 in 20 twist and it shoots 500 gr bullets just fine out to 600 yards, I also have an older C Sharps 1875 model with a 1 in 20 twist and it shoots to 800 yards just fine with both a Lyman 500 gr, 535 gr and a Saco 535 gr bullets. What really good shots have found was that a slightly faster twist like 1 in 18 or even faster gives a slight edge in accuracy at very long ranges. The 1 in 18 twist has gotten to be popular at this time and it works very well as I have a couple of rifles with that twost. However the average BPCS would not tell the difference.

Good evening
I have a 1-20 twist and a custon 33 " 1-18 on a Roler and at 600 yards you would be hard pressed to see much different with a 500 - 540 grain boolit.
Even my 1884 model Trapdoor is slower and it launches the 540 just fine out to 500 yards. But 800+ is another story.
My I good shoot it till the barrel was smoothbore and not be concered. By the way Ned Roberts estimated bare lead boolits would Never wear a barrel out before around 35,000 + shots.

Woody, yes the '85 Uberti HiWall, 45-70 with a 1:20 twist, will produce excellent groups with proper reloads, tang, globe foresight, bubble level and a good set of eyes from 100 to 1000yds ... using cast bullets such as: Lyman 457677 - the Postells @ 535 nominal - the Lyman 457124 & 457125 and the Creedmoor's. The bullets range from 385 - 540gr.

The Uberti Highwall 45-70 barrel is made by Pedersoli which is a match grade barrel

I own and shoot one at the 100 - 1000yd ranges with consistent group accuracy in favorable wind/mirage conditions.

A couple of 1000 target pictures with a 10" X Ring and a 20" 10 ring, plus 'Homer' is less than NRA regulation target size with only a 48" height. He also fads into the shadows around 11:00AM, presenting about a 40" width verses a normal 82" sight picture ...

Here's another day shooting in 25-30mph switching winds using the Dan Theadore Mini Groove 540gr bullet. Thats 11 bullets in that group. About 2 MOA left windage and I would have been right on the money

If you remove the forearm you will ifnd "Pedersoli" marked on the bottom flat of the barrel or so I've been told.

That could well be true for the Sharps rifles being marketed under the Uberti name. Those are built (in their entirety) by Pedersoli.
But, I don't think it applies to any other rifle that Uberti sells.

Charlie, it's my understanding that Uberti has a subcontract with Pedersoli. I don't have anything in writing though for 100% support

Woody, I have that rifle. Out to 500yards, it kept me in the winning circle regularly. Beyond 500 yards, it got a little inconsistant (mostly at the 800+yards). I rebarreled mine with a Green Mountain Barrel and providing I pay attention at the reloading bench and do the right thing on the range, it shoots fantastic out to 1000meters (the furthest I have shot it).

I have read that Pedersoli and Urberti have got an agreement where they are supplying different parts to each other, but they are still separate comanies.

Well, all I know for a fact is what Dick Trenk has said.
According to him, Pedersoli and Uberti had an agreement that Uberti would stay out of Sharps...and Pedersoli would stay away from Hiwalls.

Uberti really wanted into the Sharps game, so they made a new agreement.
Pedersoli would build Sharps rifles for Uberti to put their name on...and Pedersoli could start building Hiwall rifles.

The bare receivers for the Hiwalls come from Uberti, but that's where it stops.
Pedersoli re-heat treats those receivers to meet their own specs...and all of the internals are Pedersoli-developed parts.

That's all I know...

Uberti has been making their own Hiwall barrels for ages...and I believe they still are.
