Spotted one of these in good condition which has just come in with a deceased estate and is getting registered, I don;t know how much it will sell for. The serial number is I8042809 (that's an I as in letter, not a numeral in front).

It is fitted with a 4x Weaver Micro Trac scope in Weaver rings from memory (classic american or what).

I was under the impression that these were a budget Marlin, but it seems to be a nice rifle.

Anybody got any idea how old it is and some background?

Thanks, Mick.

Are you sure it is an I. Marlin according to the lists I have seen didn't make any with an I prefix. If it is an 18 then it was made in 82. I have one with an AD prefix which puts it at 1968. It shoots better than my winnie. I have a Lyman receiver sight on mine. Most of these had Birch stocks butr otherwise were a Marlin product. Mark

It might be meant to be a 1, but it is definetly an I. Not that we were so fussy before computers :-)

It look classic Marlin, but the wood is plain. It is in as new nick.

Mick.

MARLIN Manufacturing DATE CODE.
(22 caliber bolt action & semi-autos were not serial numbered prior to 1969)
Firearm serial numbers were date coded by a prefix within the s/n, as signified below.
LEVER ACTIONS ALL FIREARMS

1945 = C 1957 = R 1968 = AD 1981 = 19 1993 = 7
1946 = D 1958 = S 1970 = 70 1982 = 18 1994 = 6
1947 = E 1959 = T 1971 = 71 1983 = 17 1995 = 5
1948 = F 1960 = U 1972 = 72 1984 = 16 1996 = 4
1949 = G 1961 = V 1973 = 73 & 27 1985 = 15 1997 = 3
1950 = H 1962 = W 1974 = 26 1986 = 14 1998 = 2
1951 = J 1963 = Y 1975 = 25 1987 = 13 1999 = 1
1952 = K 1964 = Z 1976 = 24 1988 = 12 2000 = 0
1953 = L 1965 = AA 1977 = 23 1989 = 11
1954 = M 1966 = AB 1978 = 22 1990 = 10
1955 = N 1967 = AC 1979 = 21 1991 = 9
1956 = P 1968 = AD 1980 = 20 1992 = 8

Here is the Marlin list of numbers. There is another that the early dates are a little different but not much. The Glenfields are definately a Marlin and good carbines. Usually a few dollars cheaper than the Marlins also.

Thanks for the code list Mark .:-D That dated a couple of them I've wondered about .
I have an 1895 with a "B" prefix , pretty sure it's not "AB" , any ideas ? Also , a couple of 1894c carbines I've seen have a 180 or a 190 that starts the number . Do those indicate the years '82 and 81 ?

I've got one of the Glenfields... it's a great shooting 30-30 Win. It would be a 1982 model as mark indicated.

I also keep a "date code" web page... Ranch Dog's Marlin Date Codes (http://home.awesomenet.net/~ranch-dog/Firearms/Marlin_Dates/)

Don't know what the B by itself signifies as I haven't seen it or an A on any list. It could be like the old 336 A which has a 24" barrel and the B could mean something else. Sorry, Mark

Jack, The "B" prefix was on the very first 1895's produced in the early '70's. I had one of the first 50 produced with the "B" prefix. -JDL

Mick , the 1894c carbines I've seen have a serial number that starts with a 180 or a 190 so maybe they had a similar numbering system for the bargin basement Marlins ?

JDL , this one starts with a couple zeros then has four digits . I don't know if they started at one and went from there or not . The rifle is a very nice one though , I think it has six groove rifling . Groove diameter is just under .460 .

Mick,
You could always ask over at marlinowners.com. They have a good number of forums on Marlins and some really educated people on all the Marlins. Mark
