I have a minty refurb Mosin 91/30 that I've shot plenty of surplus out of, but on a lark decided to do some cast shooting today.

Lucky me. Bore actually measures .311 across the grooves. That allows a wide range of molds to be used.

So today I tried the Lyman 314299, 311284, and Lee 160gr TL design. The nominal .311s both drop at .312 so I lubed and shot as is, using 50/50 on the conventional designs and LLA on the Lee. The 314 I sized to 314.

Tried the usual suspects. 18 gr of 4759, 11 gr of Red Dot, 17 gr of 2400... all did, well, ok. The 2400 with the 284 was the best of those bunch.

Because I was loading some 38 special with bullseye next, I also threw a few cat sneeze loads together with each bullet, just as a lark.

Well with 6 gr of bullseye, the 311284 tore one ragged hole at 50. While a real light load with bullseye has always been 'ok' I've never had one do great either.

It may be a bit wimpy for 100, may try it there but we'll see.

None of the loads leaded, WQWW. Nice lube star on the muzzle.

Had one guy come over to see if it was some rare .22 Mosin or something. No, just cast bullets and light loads (which he'd never heard of doing.....)

Also shot my 98k (I already knew it does VG to excellent with the Lee 175 gr bullet and 2400), Marlin 880, and 91/59 Mosin (jacketed). Fun, if slightly cold day.

Jonk, Please keep us updated on your loading for the mosin. I also have good luck with 311284, but sized to .312 over 2400. Stays under 3 at 100 when I do my part. Have never shot Bullseye in a rifle, so am interested in your results. What lube?
