I have been melting down some wheel weights. When fluxing with toilet ring wax on my last 2 batches I get a nasty oily greasy film.
I did change my casting pot. It almost seems as if the pot is contaminated, I did smelt some roof flashing 1st. Can silicone ruin your pot?

It seems to clean up ok just a lot more work than the last 100lbs or so?

toilet wax is a nasty mess...hard as heck to wash off your hands. try fluxing with a pine stick...the more heartwood the better.

Yeah, paint stir sticks & sawdust get my vote.

No, silicone will not ruin your pot. But the stuff you're seeing is probably mineral oil, and that's harmless too. If you use wax to flux scrap lead, just use candle ends to avoid the mineral oil.

Everything negative you mention about toilet ring wax makes it pretty good as 30-50% component to bullet lube!
Mixed 50-50-ish with any of several stacks of Alox based stick lube I've accumulated over the years, it works fine on .38, .357, .45 ACP, .45 colt, .30-30, .35 Remington, and .45-70.

Sawdust will clean the crud out of your pot well too. It will absorb anything that hasn't burned off.

Don't hesitate to toss a lit match in there as well to help burn off waxes and oils.

A couple handsfull. Let is sit on top untill completely charred then mix the melt thouroughly. You can light it with a match to char it quicker.

I just use a cedar.pine, or Pinon stick. I stir the **** out of it. Then pieces of ash come to the top and piece of coals break off . This is from being under the heat for awile. I like stirring in the oxygeon to the melt also. Then I just skim off the ashes and pour my ingots.

I use the toilet ring wax 50/50 with parafin wax and a little STP. Seems to work great.
