Does anyone have some load data for 22 WCF they would be willing to share. Irecently acquired a Win 1885 hi wall in 22WCF with mint bore and would like to load using either the Lyman#225438 or #225415.

Best I got is from the 3rd edition of Cartridges of the World:

- 45 gr. "J" bullet; 4 grs. Unique = 1500 FPS
- 45 gr. "J" bullet; 6 grs. 2400 = 1650 FPS
- 45 gr. bullet; 13 grs. FFFg = 1540 FPS

These loads should work for cast as well. The Cast boolits you list are 41 and 45 grs. according to Lyman.

Slug your barrel first, I seem to recall that the .22 WCF used a .226 or .228" bullet. If your boolits fit you should be able to have a lot of fun with it.

That black powder load needs a boolit that holds a good bit of lube. I tried it back when I had my Ballard cut to 22 WCF and the boolit I used (225438) needed better lube. Now they have lubes for black powder but back then I was unaware of them. I may revisit the blackpowder 22 WCF but not right now.

Good luck with the High Wall.

Thanks for the reminder, I will. I thought the .226 to .228" diameter was 22 Savage.

The .22 WRF sports a .226" groove diameter but I thought the 'WCF' was .224"?

I look forward to what TonyT finds out and posts back when he slugs his bore.

Hey, like I said, I seem to recall the bore size was different. This may be because of the two different bore sizes for the .22 Hornet, but it is best to know what size you need anyway. I know new information on the .22 WCF is scarce; I believe it is because everybody tries to segregate the .22 WCF and the .22 Hornet.

Anyway, Tony, I wish you luck; old rifles are fun to shoot.

You will find the WCF has a bore that will run between .226-.228" At least MY 1885 does, as do a couple more I know of. Mine is .228".

Ballard,

Thanks for the clarification on .22 WCF groove diameter. By chance do you know the twist rate Winchester used in their .22 WCF barrels as well?

Thanks, Eutectic

The .22 WCF twist as made by Winchester was 1 in 16, according to Grant. I use 6 gr of 4759 under the 225415 in my .22 WCF. I size the boolits as little as possible, or not at all.
