Ok its obvious from the title I would like to get a birthday present for myself. And am leaning towards a pedersoli reproduction 1861 58 caliber springfield. I've never shot the holy black except outta my 45 caliber CVA cannon. Any pros or cons that I should be aware of?. Any comments or suggestions are always welcome. Frank

I highly recommend shooting those things! But they can be addictive if you aren't careful.:)

I think the standard load was 60 grains of ffg and either a 460 (575213 OS) or 505 (575213) grain MiniƩ.

They do shoot round balls pretty well, but I always had better accuracy with the MiniƩ.

Whatever you decide to shoot, you will have a ball! :drinks:

Thanks guys for the birthday wishes, but I gotta be honest and tell you all that it is in october but whats a few months. I have a pedersoli catalog and like the looks of the 1861 springfield. 44woody will be sending me some round balls and minnies to try out. Now I gotta scrounge up some lead and the other stuff before I can get this rifle. Never shot BP before so this should be a real learning experience. Frank

Frank 46,Been playing with them minne shooters for 30 years,Love it! Anyway it is fun once you get it figured out.you can get 3 moa with the crappy sights and all
First thing, forget about what size the clamed bore size is.It will be a lie.
The Italian repops cab run .572-.584.There are minne moulds made
that will cover you.[most of late I have seen are in the .580 range]
You will need a minne that is .0015-.002 under bore size to group well.
Sizers can be had for lubersizers, press through or simple hand ones.
Your load in ff or fff of 40-50 gr is what most guys use.
Use any good BP lube, some combinations like just the grease grouves lubed, some the base cavity.A few both.
Use only soft lead. You will find that to hit anything at 50 yd you will need to add a taller front sight.About .100 is in the ballpark.

I have about 30 minne moulds of diffrent types and sizes. You get a bore size and I can get ya some to play with

Jim, thanks for the offer. Now for the stupid question. How does one slug the bore on a front stuffer??. Do you use a captive slug on a cleaning rod??. See I told you it was a stupid question. Frank

............Since they have 3 lands and grooves, the EASIEST way is with a pin gage. Baring a set of those, being very careful with a dial caliper will get you very close. Then use a Minie' a thou over what the caliper said. If you have shooting friends who're shooting the rifled muskets possibly you could get one or 2 of thier different ones to try in the muzzle, then nike those. They should be a snug 'nice' fit without falling down the barrel.

Shooter 575 is right in that they do vary, but mine vary between makers so I can't say how much one manufacturer's may run. A couple Zouaves I have both use .577". A Colt artillery carbine uses .583" and a 2 band Enfield wants a .580".

Like Buckshot says a pin gauge is best way.But most people aint gonna have acess to any here is a quicky.
Take a undersized minne drill and securly attach it to a threaded rod.By tighting nut till minne skirt just kisses the lands. Then measure. This will get ya close enough number.
