I have learned to add the aluminum tape and Beagle the mold to get the size boolits that I need. Question? How long does the tape last before it must be redone? I am getting about 150 -200 boolits before it burns-up. Am I doing this correct?

Never had it burn up, but it can come loose and need replacement.

that sounds like you are using the wrong tape perhaps. You want the stuff that is made of very thin aluminum, not duct tape. If you'll PM me, I have more than several lifetimes worth and will gladly stick some in an envelope to you.

A 1/4" to 1/2" piece on either side is plenty.
One $6.95 roll should last a family of casters several generations.

That would be going the wrong way, unless that's a typo. Just to be clear, beagling makes the boolit dia larger.

wiljen,
Thanks for the tape. I have picked-up two different types of aluminum duct tape from work but neither is of your quality. One had a quilted appearance and the other a thick backing. I think your tape will stay on the mold longer. Thanks again!!!!!!!!

NOT duct tape! Metal aluminum tape. Pure aluminum with sticky on the back.

MtGun44,
I think we are both talking the same thing. While I used the term duct tape, it is an aluminum tape that you peel off the back so it can stick. It is used to seal air handler ducts. It is not the cloth duct tape that you are thinking about. When the tape fails on the mold, a piece of aluminum comes unglued and falls off. Think I have been using a poor quality tape for this application.

OK. We are on the same wavelength. I have always thought that the term duct tape
was the cloth tape with a gray color kinda like aluminum. I do know that the aluminum
metal tape is used on ducts - which, of course, means it can be called duct tape, too.

However, I would bet if you asked 100 people to select which roll was "duct tape" you'd
get them selecting the cloth tape about 99 times.

Sounds like there is a better high temp adhesive out there on some of the aluminum
tapes.

I have two types of the metal "beagling" tape. One has the paper backing and it mics at .002 without the backing. The other kind is called "High Temp Flue Tape" which has no backing but sticks to itself. This mics at .003. The "High Temp Tape" is definitely the way to go since it lasts a very long time on the mold. Currently I have a Lyman 457125 that is beagled on one side only and to date have 700 casts without the tape coming loose. It's officially called 3M High-Temperature Flue Tape and I found it at my local Ace Hardware, $7.98 for 15 feet.

That ought to be enough for about 30,000 molds!

Sometimes when I put a mold away with the tape in it, it is a booger to get open the next time I use it. It might almost be worth it to clean the tape off the molds after every use. Especially if you use the mold at more than one diameter.

Will what temp is the tape you use rated for?

I've some of your stuff from the Lee menting kit you did and it works champion.

Just everyone I know is after a piece and I'd like to source a roll over here.

How does this stuff look?

I tried a piece of the tape that Will sent to me. After casting a couple hundred boolits, the tape was still in place. It had not shifted any. It appears the adhesive is better than the tapes I was using. That is good stuff.

FYI - 'Duct Tape' was originally called 'Duck Tape', because it was grey (?) and waterproof. Was NOT meant to be used on heating ducts.

Also - did you know that Murphy's Law was NOT originally promulgated (LOVE that word!) by Murphy, but by another guy with the same name?

I have a 429303 that is not wanting to play mice with a .44 Special or .44 Magnum.

Went to the local hardware store and bought some "Metal Repair Tape". Has a very sticky backing to it and mikes our at .0025".

Put one layer on both blocks. Mold closes like a bank vault. Do I need another layes or just fire up the pot and see what happens?

Your advice gentlemen.

I'd try it and measure a few. You should be about .004 above your previous size
