Yes it is a good one in a 444 !

I have a 1974 Second Model 444 set up with this exact bullet ! Pushing it with H322 and lighting it off with CCI200 primers !

so for a Marlin can I crimp in the groove provided or do I need one of those 'factory crimp' thingies?

Quite frankly I don't much worry about crimp grooves and crimp where I want as long as the round will cycle thru the loading port and the action into the chamber .

It's been my experience so far that not crimping in the groove doesn't lessen my accuracy .

Beerd, the Lee 310 is a very good bullet for the .444 and was my number one for many years in that caliber. I killed a whack of critters with that bullet and it was devastating. It has two crimp grooves and you probably can't use either. I found for my Marlins, I had to seat deeper to get good feeding and used the Lee die to apply a moderate crimp to the bullet just in front of the top groove.

In the last few years I've switched over to Ranch Dog designs as all the dimensions are purpose cut to a Marlin .444 but that said, I wouldn't hesitate to use the Lee again. It is a better game bullet than any factory j-bullet you can buy and for the awesome price of $20 for the mold, you're in business. Size .432".

That 21 grs of 296 works well in both my marlin and rossi carbines. It does kick a mite too hard for the 4 5/8s vaqueros, however

Funny thing is, my15 and up gr loads of 2400 seem to recoil harder.
I am really begining to like 296.
