I entered the cast game for the SKS. Tonight I cast about 100 boolits - Lee 160gr TL. I have IMR 4198 powder and H335 on hand. I have used 22.5 gr IMR with 150 gr FMJ but cannot find a reference for any 160gr Lead in any of my manuals. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=13453 My Krag rifle likes the bullet too, would like it even better with a bit more lube.

I would start with 20 grains and work your way up from there if you wanted to. 1900-2000 FPS is what I usually shoot for in my SKS rifles when shooting cast.

Thanks Ole. I can't wait to get some loaded and take a trip to the range.

Thanks Ole. I can't wait to get some loaded and take a trip to the range.

Crazy ruskie ammo prices and my sks are the reasons I got into casting.

Glad I could help. :)

One more thing: If your neck tension doesn't hold the bullets for some reason, take the guts out of your resizing die and use it like you would a lee factory crimp die to put a collit type crimp on your ammo.

Gentlemen;

I have a Yugo SKS and I have found that the "magic" cast bullet for it is the old Lyman 311466.

This bullet, allowing for some exposed lube grooves, will seat right up to the origin of rifling at about the maximum overall length of the SKS's operating specs.

With one of those "Tech" receiver sights I can shoot 5x1.500 groups at 100 yards with this bullet and surplus w/c 844 - a powder very similar to the standard 223 ball load ~ 23.5 grains.

God evening,
Forrest

+1 on the 31466 bullet. Mine drops at .313 and is giving me better accuracy than the Lee 155 on average.

No chance to get to the range and provide a report. It could be a while as the range suffered flood damage during the weekend storms.
