Anybody got a load for a Marlin lever gun in 450 with the Lee 405 gr?I am trying to take some of the Bite out of it.I have some IMR 4895 and H-335.I also have a Bunch of extruded powder that I pulled from 8mm ammo that is close to IMR 4895.I need to get a Load worked up by Sunday.I have Scoped this Jewel and you really have to hold it with Lever revolution ammo to keep from getting cut by the Scope so I am going to tame it down.Thx before hand Mike.

I would think any of the moderate loadings in 45/70 would work as well with the 450. In other words the loadings listed in the load books for the Model 1895 Marlin and the Model 86 Winchester. My load is 24 grains of 2400 and the Lee 405 grain bullet sized to 459. Nice thing about this load is its accurate and more miserly on powder than some other loads. No filler needed.

I had no good results with this mold in any of my .45-70s.

Are you talking about the Lee Hollow Base 405 grain .459? I have not shot it long distance yet with my Guide gun but at 25 yards it shot one ragged hole when I was sighting in my scope and when I had my Rolling block it shot well at a hundred two to two and a half inch groups and I think part of that was me with the iron sights I know a scope would have shot better but I did not have it set up for a scope which is one reason I got rid of it for the guide gun.

OOPS!!!

My apology! The HOLLOW BASE IS WONDERFUL! I had zero good luck with the
Lee 405 solid base in any .45 70s. Sorry for not reading closely enough.

As a matter of fact, the HB saved one of my old Trapdoors. Nothing would shoot even
remotely well until I went to pure lead and the HB Lee mold. First try was so good at
50 yds that I immediately shot a group at 100. It went into 3" at 100 yds.

The only risk is that with too high a pressure the base can blow out as the boolit exits
the bore ruining accy. For moderate loads it should be wonderful.

I'll try to do better on my reading comprehension next time!

I had good luck using 49 gr of 30-31 in a 45-70 as 48-95 is slower I would try like 42 gr. This would be considerably more easy on you that the full house 450 loads.

Well the solid base 405 grain Lee .45 will work well if you are willing to either shoot as cast or lube/size to .458 and give it a bath in Lee's Liquid Alox. I have used a charge of 21 Grains of 2400 or a charge of 18 grains of Unique in my 1895 Marlin in .45-70. I know that the .450 Marlin is a belted version of the .45-70 so people can juice it up with Elmer's Load of 51 grains of 3031 and a 405 grain JSP. Have fun and be safe.

Yep! The Lee Hollow Based .45/70, 405 grain bullet is the best for those old black powder guns. Use that bullet in my Trapdoor Rifle with a compressed load of Goex 2Fg.

I use 20gr of 2400 with the Lee 405gr solid base and a CCI-200 in my 1895M. It's a pleasure to shoot and makes cloverleaves in the target at 50yds. I double-dip in Lee liquid alox and size to .459"

As a matter of fact, I found this thread on a search looking for some info on a load a bit hotter with 2400. (A friend gave me about 6 lbs of it!) I use RD's 350gr and 420gr GC's for my serious shooting but want something a littel closer to full power (but still cheap to shoot).
