I am thinking about getting a .40 cal for small and medium game hunting. What size ball do most shoot in the .40 cal? I do not see many molds for the 40 listed who makes a mold for the .40?

I shoot a Lyman .395 ball in both my caplock and flintlock .40cals. 18 thou patch in the flinter, 23 thou patch in the cap. I also shoot a .40cal Minie paper patched in the caplock. If you search this forum there is a thread on .40cal.

I think you've made a good choice for the hunting you will do. I have a .40 flint from TVM and shoot a .390 ball and .015" patching lubed with Hoppes #9 Plus Black Powder lube. My mold is a Lee Precision mold-as are most of my rb molds-and costs only a fraction of the more expensive-I have lots of them too-Lyman, RCBS and Saeco molds.

I have never tried a .395 ball since the .390 loads easily but very snug. Accuracy is fine as well. I will probably try a .395 ball eventually but must say I'm satisfied with the .390.

There just happens to be a couple 395 moulds for sale in the sale section.
