Now that I've found the dirtiest 44 light load (5.3 gr Unique behind a 145 cast):-? I want to find the biggest muzzle flash for an evening picture.

Any suggestions other than BP?

I'm not certain about the newest formulations of Unique, but the old stuff from thirty years ago gave some spectacular muzzle flash in stiff pistol loads.

H110 or Winchester 296.

check the burn rate charts...pick the slowest burning one. that should do it.

I've always gotten some impressive flame from 2400 in a 357. Might be worth a try.

AA#9 also but in my experience you may need a jhp etc to get what you want

How about 4350? ;-)

How about a blank with firecraker flash powder. Should make an impressive muzzle flash.

1680 would probably work well

+1 to both these powders in full power .357. Blast and flash.

Too coarse. You wouldn't be able to get much in the case. You need something that has a slow burn rate and a high loading density. I'm thinking H335.

But realistically, Lloyd has the right idea. Back in Cincinnati when I shot at the indoor range, I'd pack the SuperMag and a few "shock & awe" loads for when the Casull boys got too annoying. 180 grain bullets over as much 1680 as I could stuff in the case would fairly well light up the building, and you could feel the concussion on the front of your body from your head to your feet.

Super Mag and Lloyd, I gotta try AA-1680 for sunset effects. My best flame-front to date has been with WW-296 and cast #429244s from a 4" Model 629. It lit up adjacent hillsides at dusk. Noticeably. Too cool.

Most of us here derive great joy from anything that turns money into noise--and flame.

That's for sure. WW296 really lights 'em up in the 357. Lots of blast and flash, and especially so in a lighter bullet weight. WW296 and the 125gr JHP in the 357mag (per Speer Handbook #13) is one that will really get everyone's attention on the range. Not a pleasant load to shoot unless one wears both ear plugs and muffs.

When I wanted to make a big flash at our night matches I would load up a hot load of Blue Dot. It really did the deed.

A 10" Contender barrel in .30-30. A full load of H-335 will make a fireball that will let you recognize a person 25 feet behind the shooter on a moonless night.

+1 on H110 or 2400 in the .44, but the brightest flash I've seen is from milspec .223 in my 10" TC barrel. When I drop the hammer on one, all I see through the scope during daylight is a bright orange flash.
