Do any of you have some scraps of UHMW plastic laying around?

I need about 36 sq. inches of 3/8" to 3/4" UHMW for a project I'm working on (not shooting related).

I've found suppliers on the web, but they all sell in much larger quantities than I need.

Any specific size? 6x6" or a rectangle? I've got a plastic wholesaler close by and I need to stop in later this week for some Plexiglas. I'll be happy to check the scrap tables there.

I'm pretty sure I have some in the shop that's about 3x36"—but it's 1/4" IIRC. If that would work, I'll cut off a chunk. I'm at a client's office so can't check now.

Great stuff…I use it on the fence of the cabinet saw and bandsaw for resawing. I counterbored screw holes. Can you even glue this stuff?

Richard

I've had good luck picking up UMHW scrap for jigs and such via Ebay. Search terms I used were "UMHW" and "scrap." Haven't bought any for about 6 months, but as I recall the price was good.

The end result will be 1 1/2" wide and 4" long. I had planned to use a nominal 3/8" thickness, and that's why I said 3/8" or 3/4".......I can saw a piece in half if need be. I'll only need four pieces if everything goes right.

I appreciate your offer, typecaster, but I hate to ask you to cut a piece that big for my uses.

What's ironic is that we used this stuff by the truckload as seal material on our hydro dam spillgates when I was still working, and we threw away wheel barrows full of scraps that would be perfect for my purposes.

It's certainly handy stuff, tough, self lubricating, non-conductive, and can even be machined.

Just noticed you were from Helena...born and raised there till I joined the Army in 89.

May be making a quick trip up there this summer.

at the risk of sounding stoopid (LOL), what on earth is UMHW plastic. I have lots of junk plastic things that may be of use to you.

The chopping boards in the big box stores are made from UHMW so I have been told on the machinist sites I visit.

Thanks, GDLT31, and by the way, welcome to the forum.

There's a great bunch of helpful people here, and your response proves that.

44fanatic: If you haven't been to Helena since 1989, you're in for a surprise.

If nobody has warned you yet, we have some major road construction scheduled for this Summer, and it's going to make travel on the north end of town a nightmare.

Was there this past December. Made it back a couple of times in the past 20 years, gets larger every time. When I left, not much on the N side of Custer. Sister lives on the NW side of town off of Green Meadow so it looks like I may have to deal with that traffic issue....probably take 15 minutes to get from one side of town compared to 10. After being around some of the bigger cities, I was surprised at how small Helena is.

What are you building?

Im looking all over for the same tough plastic that they make cutting boards out of so I can Build a transom box /cutting board on my boat. Need to find a white few pieces about 30" long by 8 to 12 " wide.

It's really not a secret....I just didn't want to bore anyone.

I own an 1800 Goldwing, and I do my own tire changes.

The new Goldwings use very large radial tires with extremely stiff sidewalls. They are so tough to change that most all manufacturers of less than commercial tire changers don't even recommend their tools be used without special equipment (including tire irons wearing UHMW protectors). I built my own tire irons, but they tend to scratch the soft aluminum wheels. The UHMW will be used as a cushion on the tire irons.

If you're really interested, you can see what I'm thinking here:

GDLT31 sent a large box of UHMW, way more than I needed, but I'll find a use for all of it.

I was surprised, he mailed it Wednesday from Florida and I received it Friday in Montana!

Gotta love that USPS flat rate priority mail.

GDLT31 even declined my payment for the shipping, but I'm sending him a "thank you" package anyway.
